Background Current RTS/CTS mechanism was designed for SU-MIMO Tx STA sends RTS addressing one Rx STA with one RA field. Rx STA addressed by the RA field responds with CTS. Some questions to be answered for CTS/RTS for MU-MIMO Which one is better, multiple CTSs response or single CTS response? If the former one is better in above question, which CTS(s) to be requested and in what order? Sep 2010 Slide 2 Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Multiple CTSs or Single CTS? Sep 2010 Single CTS Multiple CTSs Slide 3 Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Analysis Single CTS Pros: Light Low overhead Cons: Confliction-free guarantee for only one transmission between AP and one STA, no guarantee for other transmission to other STAs in the same MU-MIMO group. Multiple CTSs Pros: Confliction-free guarantee for multi-STA transmissions between AP and a group of STAs Improved throughput performance, considering the slight overhead by multiple CTSs. Cons: Extra overhead by multiple CTSs. A little higher confliction ratio during RTS/CTS period. Not efficient when the MU-MIMO burst size is very small. Sep 2010 Slide 4 Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Sep 2010 Proposed scheme(1) • Based on the analysis, we suggest using multiple CTSs • Which STA(s) in a MU-MIMO group is requested to transmit CTS frame? • Using the NSTS field of RTS frame to indicate which STA(s) in a MU-MIMO group is requested to transmit CTS frame • the information of NSTS field may or not indicate the actual number of data streams that will be used in the following MU-MIMO data frame • only STA(s) whose data stream number indicated by NSTS field of RTS frame is non-zero transmits CTS frame. • E.g, a group with 4 STAs, (A,B,C,D), assuming B and C with one data stream respectively, A and D with zero data stream ,the NSTS field can be expressed on the next slide: Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Proposed scheme(2) Sep 2010 • Option 1: • Option 2: Slide 6 Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Proposed scheme(3) Sep 2010 • In what order the mulitple CTSs are transmitted? • The position of STA in a MU-MIMO group can be informed by AP by any means. • The transmission order of CTSs can be decided as the same relative order as the corresponding STA is positioned in a MU-MIMO group. • E.g, AP broadcasts a grouping information, as follow Based on the option 1 on the previous slide, B will firstly transmit CTS , after that C transmit CTS Slide 7 Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Sep 2010 Comparison • By using the scheme proposed in this contribution, • all the transmissions between each STA and AP can be protected • Fully address “hidden node” problem, especially in the case of OBSS • Fully make sure all transmission links are active • STA(s) with no data in the MU-MIMO group should not transmit CTS, the overhead is reduced. • STA(s) in a MU-MIMO group transmits CTS in order. No additional signaling is needed. Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
Summary Multiple CTSs is better than single CTS A practical multiple CTSs solution is proposed in this contribution, which can Decide which STA(s) in a MU-MIMO group is requested to transmit CTS frame, and In what order these CTSs are transmitted. Sep 2010 Slide 9 Tian Kaibo, ZTE Corp
