Part 2Explore Explore waves on water using the materials provided. • Ask yourself and share… what you want to find out about waves on water. • How can the floating corks be used as a tool to help in wave observations. • What could you find out if there were two or three corks floating at measured intervals?
Plan your exploration. • Record (list) the materials you intend to use in your exploration. • Discuss possible set ups. • Choose one of your set ups to use in your exploration. • Conduct your exploration. • Record your observations. (see next slide for specific instructions.)
Consider the following. • Watch for subtle changes in the cork motionin the water. • Space corks at measured intervalsin the water tank. • Look for evidence of wavelength, amplitude, frequency, vibration and matter (medium). • Water waves, light waves, and sound waves have many of the same properties. • Look for evidence of energy and energy transfer. • Waves on lakes and oceans are a result of moving air and wind. • Look for evidence of reflection and/or refraction.
Record you investigation in your journal. • Write what you are trying to find out. (State the question/problem.) • Make a list of materials you will use in your investigation. • Draw and label a diagram of your model. • Write the steps you took to make observations. • Record your observations • What did you find out? Include a claim and evidence.

Wrap Up Discussion • How are light, sound and water waves similar and different? • Why are waves on water used as a model for describing light and sound waves? • What properties do all waves have in common? • Review the section in the book Principles of Light that relates to refraction and diffraction and compare the demonstrations in the book to simulations we just observed.
Journal Entry • Draw and label an illustration of waves on water. Label frequency, amplitude, and wavelength. • Explain why waves on water are often used as models for sound and light waves. Include similarities and differences between the three types of waves. (sound waves, light waves, and waves on water)
