We have the answers! Questions about 6th Grade?
What will my schedule be like? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Daily Schedule Information You will have eight class periods per day. • You will have Math, Science, Social Studies, Literature, and Language Arts. • You will have a “specials” class daily. These “specials” are PhysEd, Art, and Career & Life and will change every 12 weeks, so you will end up having all three classes by year’s end. • You will have one elective. You get to choose either Band, Choir, or Integrated Technology. • You will have a daily “Warrior Time” study hall period. • You will have a 25 minute lunch.
How will I know when to change classes? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

How will I get to class on time? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Getting to Class on Time • Most classes are located in the sixth grade hallway. They are right next to one another! • You are given a full four minutes to get to class. This is plenty of time - even if you have to go to your locker and the restroom! • During the first several days, teachers will be understanding if you have trouble getting to class due to locker trouble, etc.
What if I am late to class? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Tardy Procedures • Your teacher will fill out a tardy slip for you and file it with the office. (Some teachers have you complete the slip.) • If you accumulate a total of five tardy slips within a grading period, you will be assigned to a Friday School detention. • Friday School is held from 3-6 p.m. You are responsible for transportation home at 6 p.m.
What about lockers? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Locker Info • Keep your locker clean and organized! This will help you get to class on time with the materials you need. • You are responsible for keeping your locker in good condition. Magnets are allowed - stickers are not! • Use a combination lock on your locker to keep your things safe.“Key" locks are not recommended!
What about bathroom breaks? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Restroom Breaks and Hall Passes • With 4 minutes between classes, and not too far to travel, we encourage you to use the restroom during breaks. • If you MUST use the restroom during class, you will need to sign out in the class binder, then take a plastic “paddle” pass with you. • For using the restroom during class, you will have to turn in a restroom pass (you get 8 per quarter), or lose a “materials” point. • If you need to leave the room for other reasons (locker, office, etc.), you will follow this same procedure. • Using your break time wisely is really important. Teachers have the right to deny you permission to leave class, and will do so if they feel that you are abusing the privilege.
What should I bring to class? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Class Materials • Pencil • Pen • Highlighter • Chromebook (charged!) • Notebook Paper • Agenda/Assignment Notebook • Subject Folder and Homework Folder • Independent Reading Book • Journal and/or Text Book (for some classes)
What if I forget materials? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Each quarter, you will receive a “materials” grade in math, science, social studies, literature, and language arts. You will start each grading period with a certain number of points and will lose a point each time you forget to bring something and have to go to your locker for it! Forgotten materials also count you out for the end-of-the-year MAT Award “Materials Always There” After all, proving you are responsible is a major sixth grade goal! Note: If you forget your Chromebook at HOME, you will get a lunch detention.
What do I need to know about Chromebooks? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Chromebook Care • You will be issued a Chromebook and charger at the beginning of the year. • You are responsible for keeping your Chromebook in good condition and bringing it to school each day with a full charge. Chargers must be left at home, so be sure to plug in your Chromebook during evenings or overnight. • Although cases aren’t required, the sixth grade staff highly recommends them. They really reduce the chance of damage to your Chromebook, and many cases cost about $20. If shopping for a case, search “Acer Chromebook c721 case.” • If your Chromebook does get damaged, you and your family are responsible for paying for its repair. The cost involved can be reduced if your family chooses to participate in our Chromebook Care insurance policy. • Just like you’ll want to keep your Chromebook in top condition, so will your classmates. Please do not touch anyone else’s device! Messing with another’s CB will result in (at least!) a disrespect strike.
Chromebook Covers TOTE CASE OR iPEARL HARD CASE- Chromebook Cover Options Ontario MS FCCLA is offering 2 different case options to students for $27. The form must be turned in to Mrs. Muzic in room 109, or the form can also be found online at: http://bit.ly/CBCases YOU WILL GET A FORM ON THE WARRIOR TIME PAGE
Chromebook Rules & Consequences • When you sign the agreement to accept your Chromebook, one condition you are agreeing to is to use your Chromebook for educational purposes. This means that the only games you should be playing on your device are those games that teachers have introduced to you through their classes. • If you are playing an approved game, but at an unapproved time, you will receive an off-task strike. If you are playing an unapproved game, you will receive a lunch detention. • If you forget your Chromebook at home, you will receive a lunch detention. (Even if someone brings it in for you!) • If your Chromebook’s battery dies at school, you will be allowed to charge it at the teacher’s charging station, but you will need to serve a lunch detention. What good is your CB with a dead battery? CBs charge very quickly and hold their charge for multiple days, especially if you use it only for school purposes.
What about behavior? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Strikes for: ~ Talking at inappropriate times ~ Off-task behavior ~ Disrespect “Three Strikes and You’re Out!”(A little note from “Coach” will remind you that you have three strikes.) Six Strikes = A note in your agenda and lunch detention will be assigned! (This gives your parents notice that your behavior needs to improve.) Nine Strikes = Discipline Form and Friday School Friday School is held from 3-6pm on certain Fridays. Parents pick you up. No Strikes = BAT Award for Behavior Always Terrific! (Receive your BAT Award at the end-of-the-year Awards Assembly) Baseball Discipline Plan Try not to strike out!
What exactly is “Warrior Time?” ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Warrior Time • Every 6th grader has Warrior Time daily. • Your WT teacher will be keeping a close eye on your grades for all subjects, on your behavior, and on your AR (independent reading) progress. • Warrior Time is the perfect time to ask for help! You can ask your WT teacher, a WT classmate, or ask to go see the subject-area teacher for clarification or a reteach. • The library is usually open for at least 30 minutes during WT, so you can take care of returning and checking out books.
Homework Chart Posted on the WT Page Updated daily by noon Access it from home, too! (If home sick or in evening) Homework During Warrior Time Warrior Time is a great opportunity to get morning homework done. Once that is done, we recommend you work on independent reading. Any homework you are assigned in the afternoon should be done at home... Why? You never know how long your HW is going to take, and counting on completing it during Warrior Time is taking a real risk! Sometimes, Warrior Time is used for an important meeting or activity and time is greatly reduced or eliminated. If you spend WT rushing to do HW due that afternoon, you may not do quality work. You should work on your morning HW while the lesson is fresh in your mind, and if you have questions about it, you can meet with your morning teacher before the work is due the next day.
What is a lunch detention? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Lunch Detention • A lunch detention is a very quiet, extra-strict study hall held during Warrior Time in Room 213. • Students in lunch detention lose the privilege of going to the library, and usually don’t get permission to go see any other teacher. • Instead of going to lunch with the other 6th graders, those in lunch detention are walked down separately, get their lunches, and return to eat silently in the lunch detention room. • Students in lunch detention may need permission to work on their Chromebook. • Mr. Strickler keeps track of the lunch detentions you serve. Once you’ve had to serve five, he assigns you a Friday School as a further deterrent.
Why might I get a lunch detention? Will my parents find out? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Lunch Detentions Result From... Don’t want to worry about this? • Strikes: Six strikes within a grading period = a lunch detention • Missing Homework: Two yellow slips within a week = a lunch detention • Missing Agenda Signature: Every 5th time your agenda isn’t signed by a guardian • Forgotten Chromebook = a lunch detention • Dead CB Battery = a lunch detention • Especially poor behavior choice = a lunch detention You probably won’t have to! The majority of 6th graders never serve a lunch detention!
What should I know about homework? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Homework • You will have homework almost every night, and keeping up-to-date in all subjects is crucial. • Record your assignments in your Student Agenda (assignment notebook) and use this as a tool to remember your homework assignments. • Take your agenda home each night, and check off the work as you complete it. • To start everyone off on the right track, we’ll begin the year requiring that your agenda be signed by a parent each night. If you forget 5 times within a quarter, you will serve a lunch detention. This repeats every 5th time per quarter if necessary and is checked during Warrior Time.
Homework Passes • You will be given a sheet of homework passes each nine weeks; one pass each for language arts, math, science, social studies, and literature. • Some assignments will be designated “No passes allowed.” • Save your passes for emergencies! If you happen to forget to do your homework, or have one of those crazy nights with no extra time, you’ll be glad you can turn in a pass.
Required Heading Class Period # First and Last Name Today’s Date Neatly write your heading in the upper right corner of your papers! In order to help us keep track of your papers, we have a required heading. Always use this heading for your sixth grade classes! Starting in the second quarter, your grade will be lowered if you forget!
How will I keep track of my assignments? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Assignment Notebook • Use your assignment notebook (AKA agenda) wisely and you will never forget to do your homework, study for a test, or bring materials to school! • Each day, when the teacher makes an assignment, write it in your assignment notebook. • When you complete the work, checking it off your list is a great feeling!
What if I don’t have my homework when it is due? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Missing Assignment Notice(Yellow Slip!) • Each student must turn in something when an assignment is due. If you have not completed the assigned work, you must fill out a Missing Assignment Notice, even if you intend to use a Homework Pass for the assignment. • On the form, you’ll need to explain your reason for not having the assignment completed. The teachers then record this reason in the comment section of the online grade book. • If you don’t turn in an assignment, you will receive a ZERO, which really hurts your grade. If you forget to do an assignment, turn in a Homework Pass or turn the work in the next day for a “LATE” grade. • “LATE” work completed well earns a 70%, while “LATE “ work completed satisfactorily earns a 50%. • Beginning 2nd semester, we will no longer take “late” work.
What happens if I copy a friend’s homework or otherwise cheat? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
What is cheating? Cheating can include.. • copying homework or quiz/test answers from another student’s paper (with or without their knowledge) • Letting someone copy from your paper • using a resource (online or notes, etc.) to help you with answers when that is not permitted • starting a test or quiz, turning it in or submitting it unfinished, then looking up answers you need to finish it later
What are the consequences of cheating? 1st Offense • You (and possibly your friend) get a ZERO on the assignment • Your teacher calls home to inform your parent • The teacher tells Mr. Strickler, who records it • You are assigned a Lunch Detention 2nd Offense • You (and possibly your friend) get a ZERO on the assignment • Your teacher calls home to inform your parent • The teacher tells Mr. Strickler, who records it • You are assigned a Friday School
What should I know about grades? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Grading You earn your grades each quarter through a combination of tests, quizzes, homework, daily participation, class activities, and projects. How much weight each of these categories carries is up to the teacher. We all use the same grading scale to determine letter grades. Basically, 90’s are A’s, 80’s are B’s, 70’s are C’s, 60’s are D’s, and scores below 60 are F’s.
How can I check my grades? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
ParentAccess Online Gradebook • Students and their parents can stay informed of current grades by logging in to their personal “ParentAccess” account on the Internet. • If you are new to the district, the office will provide you with a username and password for this account. Otherwise, your fifth-grade login should work. After your initial log-in, you may change your assigned username and password to something easier for you to remember by following the written directions on the site. Be sure to let your parents know this new info if you do change it! • An easy way to access this account is to go to our website: ontarioschools.org and under the Student heading, click on “Grades.” Enter your user name and password and you will have access to lots of useful information that we strive to keep as current as possible. • We have learned that students who regularly check their own progress seem more motivated to improve their grades, so we encourage you to check this site often. Checking grades together is a great way for you and your parents to communicate about what’s going on at school.
What if I have to miss school? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Make Up Work • When you are absent from school, it will be your responsibility to make up the work you missed. • From home, you can check the Warrior Time Homework Chart and see the assignments for your core classes. You may be able to access the materials you need via Google Classroom. • When you return to school, it is your job to get any handouts you missed from the teacher. Most teachers have a special “absent work” spot where they keep these papers. Ask the teacher or another student if you need help understanding the work. • For each day you missed, you get one day to turn the work in. But turn in the completed work as soon as possible, because you will have to keep up with new assignments as well! As a reminder, our handbook explains the importance of turning in a note to the office explaining why you were absent. Otherwise, your absence may not be excused and you may not get credit for your work.
Do we have state tests in the sixth grade? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Ohio Achievement Assessments • All sixth graders take Ohio Achievement Assessments in April and/or May. • These tests will measure your skills in Reading, Writing, and Math. • The sixth grade teachers are very familiar with the tests and will help you prepare for them.
