Character Education • The human population is growing very fast, we will need to keep up and help others, more now than ever before Lesson 36 Honors Biology
Objectives • Define a population • Describe population dispersal patterns • List some limiting factors in population growth • Draw out a human population growth curve • Define the 4 regions of typical population growth curves in nature Lesson 36 Honors Biology
Class Notes • The human population has grown because of better sanitation, improved health, and agricultural ability to produce food • When birth rate (BR) and death rate (DR) are equal the population is stable, horizontal line • When BR > DR the population grows, the line goes up • When DR > BR the population shrinks, the line goes down • Human population growth is most rapid in developing countries, slowest in developed countries Lesson 36 Honors Biology
Notes • Exponential Growth Curve – rate of growth stays the same and as a result the population increases
Notes • Logistic Model – exponential growth is limited by a density dependent factor
Class Notes - 37 • Population distributions include: • Random : not evenly spaced • Uniform : evenly spaced • Clumped : clustered in space • Currently the world population is over 6 billion • In 1776 the world population was 1 billion
