  1. Introduction to waves Mrs. Mikula & Mr. Thompson

  2. WAVES VIDEO Physics Crash Course

  3. Waves

  4. Definitions • Wave • Transverse Wave • Longitudinal Wave • Wavelength • Frequency • Period

  5. WAVE A rhythmic disturbance that carries energy through a medium. A medium is a substance or material that transports a wave (or disturbance). ex. Ocean water = ocean wave Waves

  6. DIFFERENT TYPE OF Waves Transverse Wave Longitudinal Wave A wave that transfers energy parallel to its oscillation. A wave that transfers energy perpendicular to its oscillation.

  7. Labeling a Transverse Wave

  8. WAVELENGTH One complete cycle of the wave, from crest to crest. Symbol (λ)

  9. FREQUENCY The number of cycles in one second. Measured in Hertz (Hz)

  10. Period The number of seconds per one cycle. Measured in seconds (s)

  11. FORMULAS

  12. WAVELength formula λ = v/f λ = WAVELENGTH measured in: METERS (m) v = VELOCITY measured in: METERS PER SECOND (m/s) f = FREQUENCY measured in: HERTZ (Hz)

  13. VELOCITY Formulas v = λf Velocity = wavelength X frequency v = d/t Velocity = distance/ time v = VELOCITY measured in: METERS PER SECOND (m/s)

  14. FREQUENCY Formulas f = v/λ frequency = velocity/ wavelength f = 1/T frequency = 1/Period f= FREQUENCY measured in: HERTZ (Hz)

  15. PERIOD Formula T = 1/f Period = 1/ frequency T = PERIOD measured in: SECONDS (s)

  16. Example #1 A sound wave has a frequency of 192Hz and travels the length of a football field, 91.4m in 0.271s. • What is the velocity of the wave? • What is the wavelength? • What is the period?

  17. Example #1 b. wavelength? c. period? a. velocity? Formula: v= d/t v= 91.4m / 0.271s v= 337.3 m/s Formula: λ= v/f λ= 337.3m/s / 192Hz λ= 1.76 m Formula: T= 1/f T= 1 / 192Hz T= 0.00521 s

  18. Frequency is CYCLES per SECOND. Therefore, in one second, the wave REPEATS itself 192 times. The period is the amount of time it takes for the wave to COMPLETE one cycle. It takes the wave 0.00521 seconds to REPEAT itself.
