  1. Cornea Treatment Best Cornea specialist in Mumbai- Dr. Vinay Agarwal

  2. What is Cornea? There two main functions of the Cornea: • The Cornea is the eye's outer layer that protects the inner part of the eye, which includes the pupil, iris, and anterior chamber. • Its primary function is to refract or bend the light so you can see clearly. • There are a total of 5 layers of Cornea: a. The corneal epithelium b. Bowman's layer c.The corneal stroma d. Descemet's membrane e. The corneal endothelium

  3. The function of the Layers • The corneal epithelium: It is the topmost layer of the cornea. It absorbs the nutrients and oxygen from tears. • The corneal Stroma: Stroma is the thickest layer of corneal, like a sandwich between the epithelium and endothelium. It mainly contains water and protein. • Corneal endothelium: It is a single layer on the inner surface of the cornea. It works like a pump. Means stroma absorbs the excess water, and the endothelium throws it out.

  4. Types of Corneal Diseases • Corneal Opacity: Following are some factors that are responsible for corneal opacity: a.Vitamin A deficiency b.Contact with external bodies c.Congenital Corneal Abnormalities. • Keratoconus: Keratoconus is the eye condition in which the cornea changes; it's the round shape to a cone-like structure.Keratoconus is caused by decreasing protective antioxidants in the cornea. • Corneal Edema: When the endothelial cells cannot regenerate, the fluid starts collecting near the cornea, causing the swelling. This swelling stage is called as corneal edema.

  5. Causes of Corneal Disease: • A bacterial, fungal, viral infection is the main reason for corneal damage. • Some time in some patients, the main reason can not be recognized. • Age is another reason for cornea health. • Contact lenses. • Any eye injury or cornea damage

  6. Symptoms of Corneal Diseases • Blurry or cloudy image • Pain in the eye • Tearing • Headache and fatigue • Eye sensitivity because of the light

  7. Treatments for Corneal Diseases: • Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (C3R): This treatment is mainly for the Keratoconus situation. It is also known as C3R treatment. This procedure secures the keratoconus and prevents further vision problems. • Cornea Transplant: It is the treatment stage when there is no use of contact lenses, and the cornea is very thin. It is very successful eye surgery. • Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS): It is different from the corneal transplant in which two micro-thin, semicircular rings can help to stabilize the cornea because of which glasses or contact lenses provide you vision. This treatment is mainly for Keratoconus patients.
