DATASET • CAQUAKES (28 AUG-9 SEP 2000) • FAMILY (MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS BY JOHN A. RICE) • BOTH DATASETS CAN BE FOUND ON PROF SUESS WEBSITE: • http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/~esuess/Department/Seminars/Data&Technology/Workshop01%20-%20tableau/workshop01.htm
Open Dataset in Tableau Public • Download the CAQUAKE and the CANCER Dataset from the Prof Eric Suess Website. • Open Tableau Public and Upload the CAQUAKE Dataset . • Make Sure each Column has One Variable Name. • FIELD NAMES separates as • DIMENSIONS (Categorical) and MEASURES (Numeric).
Create Visualization:Tableau selects possible Visualization when you select a FIELD NAME • DATASET 1: CAQUAKE • Graph : Drag Mag to Row Column. The Plot is shown below.
Trend among Variables Depth vs Mag: Select Depth as Column and Mag as Row. Make sure to select Dimensions for both Variables. Click on Analyze and then Show Trend lines
Editing the Trend line. Right Click on the TREND LINE . Select From the Options Edit Trend line Select Exponential . To see More (P-value , t-test , R square e.t.c) about the Trend line: Click on Describe Trend line.
MAP OF LOCATIONS • Select both Lon and Latand Click on the highlighted Map. • Select Dimensions on both Column and Row. - Displays the LOCATIONS of Magnitudes based on the Longitudes and the Latitudes. • Select LIGHT STATE BORDERS from the Map Options - Draws Border line between California and Nevada. • Choose black as Border .
Editing the Locations • Select Mag from Measures as Size • Select Date (year) as color . • Still in Color column, Click on Year and Select weekday. • Weekday column click on Arrow (down) select Edit. • select Tableau 10 from pull-down Menu. • Select Mag as label. • ASSIGN PALLETE, APPLY and OK.
Places • Select from the Map Options • Light state Borders • US Metro Boundaries and Place Names.
Go Global • Create a New Dashboard • Click on Sheet tab and Select NEW DASHBOARD
Finally • Send the link to a friend through email • Put it on resume • Post it on Facebookor Twitter
