EURO-ARGOA new European research infrastructureEuropean contribution to a global ocean observatory • A significant component of the global Argo array of 3.000 floats in operations • Requires strong international and European cooperation • Proposal : Europe establishes an infrastructure for ¼, i.e. 800 floats in operation • Requirement : 250 floats per year including regional enhancements (Nordic seas, Mediterranean) (about 50 floats for regional enhancements) EURO ARGO: A new European Research Infrastructure
Euro Argo Preparatory Phase Main expected outcomes : • Agreement for long term (10-20 years) operation of Euro-Argo (financial, governance, organisation, technical). Member States. • Agreement with EC (GMES, GEO) for additional long term EC funding • Most technical and organizational issues to be solved • Links with international structure EURO ARGO: A new European Research Infrastructure
PP partnership • France: IFREMER (representing the multi-agency Coriolis project) + SHOM • Germany: BSH + Konsortium Deutsche Meeresforschung (KDM) • UK : Met Office and NERC. • Netherlands: KNMI • Spain: IEO • Italy: OGS • Ireland: Marine Institute • Norway : IMR • Portugal : FCCUL • Greece : HCMR • Bulgaria : USOF • Poland : IOPAS EURO ARGO: A new European Research Infrastructure

Deployed European floats (from AIC) and national long-term plan (to be updated) Use the PP to consolidate national long-term plans (highly needed !) New EU countries needed Needed EC direct contribution likely to be at least 30% ? EURO ARGO: A new European Research Infrastructure

Euro Argo and Argo International • Consolidate European contributions to Argo. Attract new countries. • Develop direct long term EC funding (30% or ) for floats and coordination (through GMES). • could include contribution to the international structure (AIC, APO) (inputs needed) • Euro Argo when implemented will organize the reporting from European countries to Argo international. First phase will already facilitate this reporting. • Need to develop a longer term vision on where Argo will go for the next 10-20 years (e.g. for new sensors).
