  2. Objectives • Discuss the legal issues related to protective equipment • Identify the different types of protective equipment available • Discuss the features of running shoes and the proper selection • Discuss the efficacy of knee and ankle braces in reducing injuries

  3. Legal Issues • NEVER modify protective equipment • Have protective equipment reconditioned and recertified following the manufacturer’s guidelines • Fit all equipment according to manufacturer’s guidelines

  4. Types of Protective Equipment • Helmets • Face guards • Mouth guards • Ear guards • Glasses/goggles • Football shoulder pads

  5. Types of Protective Equipment • Sports bras/sports cup • Shoes • Orthotics/Heel cups • Shin guards • Ankle braces • Knee braces

  6. Helmets • Buy only NOCSAE approved helmets (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) • Football • Baseball • Softball

  7. Helmets • Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) set standards for: • Hockey helmets • Hockey face masks
