  5. Eliphaz • “God is fine gold” • “God is dispenser” • From Teman (2:11) • Leading spokesman for the 3 friends • “Scientist” of the group • Appears noble, sincere, wise and courtly • Main contentions • God is perfectly pure and righteous (4:17) • Man brings trouble on himself (5:7)

  6. Bildad • “Son of contention” • From Shuah • “Traditionalist” • More argumentative than Eliphaz • He charged Job with godlessness • Main contention: • God never twists justice (8:3)

  7. Zophar • “hairy” or “rough” • From Naama • Some think he may have been the oldest of the the 3 friends • Blunt-spoken, seems to possess a holier-than-thou attitude • He charged Job with boasting (11:2-6) • Main contention: • God knows iniquity when He sees it (11:11)

  8. Elihu • “He is my God” • From Buz • The youngest of the four men, not a close companion of the other 3 friends • Main contention: • God is good (33:24) • God often uses suffering to refine the righteous
