Physicsreason for an upgrade L.ROSSI@LHC Crab Cavity Workshop
Twolines for the upgrade • Beamcurrent • Beam structure • Low* and good geometric factor • Levelling. The experiment has statedthatworkingwithLpeak > 51034would pose a challenge extremelyuncertain Courtesy E. Todesco L.ROSSI@LHC Crab Cavity Workshop
Technical reasons for an upgrade • R2E (Radiation To Electronics) maybe a killer above a certain threshold • Limitation of P5 Left Triplet cooling(because of presence of SCRF in P4 Right using the samecryoplant) • Possible limitation in Inner triplet coolingat1.6 1034because of chokedHeat Ex. Tube (and additional thermal links) • Limitation of cryoplant and magnetstability(justwithoutmarginatultimatelumi) • Lack of flexibility: arc-IR fullycryocoupled • Magnet radiation damage at 300-400 fb-1 L.ROSSI@LHC Crab Cavity Workshop
Critical technologies for HL-LHC13 T Magnets- GW SC cables- CrabCavities SC Magnetsbeyond 10 tesla of acceleratorqualities. Inner triplets Quads and D1/D2 dipoles D1 couldbe the KEK design-contribution New stepforward in circularaccelerators ! Sc links for 200 kA-5 kV (1 GW DC) To removefrom tunnel Magnet Power Supply, sensible to radiadiation To easyintegration in crowdy zone To removeform tunnel the DFB (CurrentLeads) and easyoperation and maintenance CrabCavitiesat 400 MHz New equipment for accelerators, and evenmore difficult for LHC (very compact) An assetalso for LC ! First action of HL-LHC: 11 T LHC dipoleMake roomfor collimation beyond P3 In 2012-13 we plan to move 28 cold equipments Later on thiswillbeavoided, but an alternative solution isstudied in HL-LHC: A 11T LHC MB (twin) Collaboration withFermilab A warm collimatorsitting on a cold by-pass Herecryocollimatorscouldbeaccomodate L.ROSSI@LHC Crab Cavity Workshop

Governance of the wholeHL-LHC collaboration HL-LHC islargerthan the FP7 design study application (namedHiLumiLHC). But the project structure is unique, someWPs are inside FP7 and soem are not , implemented by MoUs L.ROSSI@LHC Crab Cavity Workshop
