Convection, Conduction and Radiation There are threemethods to transfer thermal energy. These are the three ways heat will move.
Conduction Definition Examples • The transfer of thermal energy, or heat, from one substance to another by direct contact.
Convection Definition Examples • The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or gas usually in a circular motion. Hot gas or liquid rises, then cools and sinks.
Radiation Definition Examples • The transfer of thermal energy through matter such as air, or space in waves.
Describe the three types of thermal energy transfer using this picture.
Describe the three types of thermal energy transfer using this picture. The fire is producing thermal energy that will move in three ways. Heat moves through convection when heat rises. Heat moves by radiation when the fire is producing waves that move outward and warm the hands on the side. Heat moves by conduction as it is in direct contact with the metal. Then is conducts through the metal poker.
Write a sentence to describe how the water circulates through the pot. Use key vocabulary: convection and thermal energy
Write a sentence to describe how the water circulates through the pot. Use key vocabulary: convection and thermal energy __The cool water goes down, meanwhile the The hot water rises and the cool water sinks making convection currents which move the thermal energy or heat. Convection moves heat in a circular motion
Describe the three methods of energy transfer in this picture?
The sun transfers thermal energy through space and hits the earth. Convection Hot air rises, then cools off and sinks. Radiation Conduction The warm ground touches the air near the ground and warms it. Describe the three methods of energy transfer in this picture?
