  1. ENVIRONMENT PILPS Update for GLASS 2004 Andy PitmanMacquarie UniversitySydney, Australiaand Ann Henderson-SellersANSTO Environment

  2. PILPS Update September 2004 • Arctic basin: ACSYS/PILPS • completed with 17 papers in Special Issue of Global & Planetary Change (August 2003) • Tropical forests: PILPS1(c) • still contributing to publs. (e.g. H-S & Pitman, 2002, BAMS) • More calibration work • using MC and an ANN to get at model structure problems [using Fluxnet data]

  3. PILPS Update September 2004 • Frozen soil and snow: PILPS 2(d) • generating publications & prompting questions • Valdai analysis (Luo et al. 2003, J Hydromet.) • Coupled PILPS/AMIP II DSP12 • LSS clusters and importance of LSSs in coupled models (H-S et al., 2003, GRL)

  4. PILPS - still learning from off-line • Carbon fluxes: PILPS C1 • excellent start; possible introduction to carbon isotopes (see IPILPS below) • Viovy, N., 2003, http://www.pilpsc1.cnrs-gif.fr/ • Arid environments: PILPS San Pedro • very slow, running about 12 months behind • do we need to offer help (or…?) to Bastidas • Isotopes in GLASS: IPILPS • proposal to be tabled today focuses on: • Stable water isotopes – ready to start • Carbon isotopes – links thru’ Farquhar in 18O tag

  5. LSS Clusters in All Climates SiBlings 3 clusters SiBlings Buckets SiBlings Buckets Buckets ENVIRONMENT SEBs normalised by ensemble of 3 re-analyses – Scaled sensible heat W m-2 Buckets; SiBlings; latest LSS Scaled latent heat W m-2

  6. Spatio-temporal Correlation • LH improves from Arid (worst) to E. Humid (best) Bucket • SH flows the other way • Bucket (O) SH v. small & low variability SiBling SiBling Bucket ENVIRONMENT • Climate trajectories differ for SiBlings & buckets

  7. Little mean difference between CHASM’s modes and AMIP models

  8. Tmin complex simplest Tmax

  9. Future … • PILPS San Pedro • iPILPS • PILPS C1 • Dolman proposal
