Actuals, Findings and Recommendations Immersion 2008-2009 October 29, 2008
Research Direction • Tools • Support • Collaboration • Interface • Increase Number of Authors
Research Process • Three Audiences • Previous Authors • Potential Authors • End-Users • Collection Methods • Usability Test • Surveys • Workshop Observation • Interviews • Extent Data Search • Tools
Webshop User Test • Immersion Students built their own Webshops • Conducted to Empathize with Previous Users • Ask pertinent and intelligent questions while collecting data • “Fresh eye” perspective • Observations • Formatting • Video and Graphics • Time to create a Webshop
Collaboration • 5 out of 13 respondents have collaborated to create Webshops. • Respondents who have collaborated have done so by meeting face-to-face and by email. • 10 out of 12 indicated that they would be interested in collaborating.
Support • 85% of the training received has been in the form of “cheat sheets” and 46% said face-to-face • Staff stated that there are very few directions within the template system
Technology • Currently previous authors use SmartBoards, PowerPoints, videos, and LCD projectors when delivering face-to-face training. • 85% of the authors surveyed considered themselves advanced or expert users of MS Word and PowerPoint, but most rated themselves as less than proficient in the use of other tools.
Interface • Previous Authors stated that the templates are easy to use. • They like the consistency of the templates and the ability to cut and paste. • Not being able to track how many people are actually viewing the Webshops is a concern • Time consuming • Current template system has limited media options. • Text heavy.
Specific Formatting Concerns • “There’s no way to view what you’re creating while your working on it.” • Reordering slides • screen reloads with each move • HTML required • Time outs • Saving • Tables and graphics not uploading correctly
Potential Authors • 1 out of 5 people said they had attempted to create Webshops • New staff who have not received training on building Webshops • Time restraints are a barrier
End-Users • 6 responses • 4 teachers • 2 parents • Have not used T/TAC Online Training (Webshops) • Confusion about how to view Webshops • Difficulty signing in • All respondents had used an online learning system before
Optimals What people really want to create effective Online Training…
In Terms of Delivery Preferences: • Simulations and demonstrations • Video/ Self-running PowerPoint Presentations • Audio • Assessments
In Terms of Support Preferences • Assistance from an experienced user • A formal training workshop Things to Consider: • How to Guide • Online Help Menu • Video Tutorial
Other Optimals • Remove HTML barrier for basic formatting -Many feel it should be automatic -If it must be incorporated, there should be help within the system • Accessibility compliancethroughout the templates -Make tags, descriptions easier to include -Use a transcription software for videos • Incorporate e-learning environment -Add interactive e-learning tools
Based on our Data • You were RIGHT! -Templates need to include videos and audio. -Templates should be more dynamic and use current technologies. -Accessibility is EXTREMELY important. • Please consider… -A formal training platform for creating Webshops -Staff members embracing Social Networking (Web 2.0) and e-learning (learner collaboration)
Webshop Tools • Adobe Presenter • PowerPoint add-on • Add audio voice-over, evaluations, interactivity elements • Has multiple 508 compliant issues • Camtasia • Screen recording software • Export to multiple formats • Video-editing interface • Adobe Captivate • Screen recording • Simulations • Creates Flash media • Import PowerPoint Presentations • Will need to train staff on complexity
Webshop Tools • Lectora • Create digital, book like instructional models • Can be used to create Course Management System • Incorporates Flash to allow interactivity • Incorporates graphs, video, PowerPoint • Produce .exe and HTML file • Podcasting • Syndicated and distributed Source of media • File distributed via web feeds • Use in conjunction with media creating software
Performance Support Needs • Translate face-to-face training to eLearning • Formatting and functionality of T/TAC Online and Webshops • Staff’s access to and use of media-development tools • The appeal of training to end-users • Methods of communication between staff and learners • The number of staff creating webshops
Recommended Design Directions • Recommend tools and provide support that meets the staff's needs effectively and efficiently • Make the process of creating Webshops more efficient by updating the template interface • Design an “ideal Webshop” that demonstrates what good interactive training looks like and how to develop it using our recommendations and designs • Research and develop a system of interaction between: • T/TAC staff collaborating on projects • T/TAC staff and the learners using Webshops • Different end-users of T/TAC Online
