Coon Hunting • Frank and Rob Giddings told their stories about the many adventures of coon hunting, just as Billy Colman had experienced in the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. • One piece of information they shared that I thought was most interesting was when they had treed 48 coons in one night.
When is coon hunting season? • Coon hunting season begins October 15th.
The sixth grade students and staff at the Upper Elementary recently enjoyed the adventures and heartaches of coon hunting experienced by Billy Colman in the novel Where the Red Fern Grows, written by Wilson Rawls. The students’ comprehension and connections to the story were enriched with special guests Frank and Rob Giddings, local coon hunters, who own, raise, and train numerous champion Treeing Walker Coonhounds. During their visit, students enjoyed learning about the hunting equipment used during coon hunting, viewing and touching an unlucky coon from a previous coon hunt, and having their curiosities and questions answered.
