EARIP- European Asthma Research and Innovation Partnership Dr Samantha Walker (Asthma UK) “Does innovative research for allergy and respiratory disease in the European Union benefit patients?” - 17th June 2014
Why asthma? • 30 million people with asthma in Europe • By 2020 approximately 120,000 people in Europe will die of an asthma attack and over 4 million hospitalisations will be needed by those most severely affected • Treatment costs about €20bn annually and lost productivity costs €9.8bn per year • There are no effective treatments for about 5% of people with asthma, and we have had few new breakthrough drug treatments • The treatments are not always appropriate (because the phenotypes of asthma are not well characterised, and because existing drugs/treatment regimens may be inappropriate for many, amongst several reasons)
The EARIP project • Co-ordinated by Asthma UK • 12 partners from across Europe • €500,000 grant, funded under the FP7 programme • Supported by 50+ consortium members
EARIP - Aims To define the activities and investment needed to: Reduce asthma deaths in Europe by 25% within 10 years and 50% within 20 years Reduce hospitalisations by 50% Increase optimum self-management (through uptake of self-management plans) by 20% To increase funding for asthma research across Europe
EARIP Work Packages (WP) Biological Clinical & translational Structural EARIP The approach to address the asthma ‘problem’ in Europe
WP1co-ordination & dissemination WP2 - Identify better ways to develop new biological targets and use existing ones more effectively • WP3 - Understand asthma phenotypes with a view to developing better treatments WP4 – Criteria to develop better and more efficient healthcare systems across Europe for people with asthma WP5 - Define and agree plans to improve diagnostic and patient self-management tools WP6 - Agree pan-European asthma research priorities to create an asthma roadmap so that researchers know what to focus on WP7 - Establish what is needed to create a European Innovation Partnership (EIP) for the management of asthma • WP8 - Create a proposal to establish a European network of clinical asthma research facilities
Patient representatives • Patient representatives in each WP • Training and support provided by Asthma UK and EFA • Attend workshops to provide input and review the reports and outputs of the WP’s • Meet annually to discuss the overall direction of the project • More widely patients will be asked to complete surveys associated with work package activities
Project progress • M10 of the project & progress across all WP’s: • WP2&3 workshop at the EAACI congress • WP4 completed review • WP5 working groups formed • WP6 survey – June 2014 • WP7 influencing and stakeholder mapping - WP8 survey – July 2014
