What does the UK Youth Parliament do nationally? • The UKYP enables young people to change the world for the better • It is run by young people for young people aged 11-18 years • The UKYP has 600 elected Members of Youth Parliament • At the Annual Sitting (in July) the UKYP produces a national manifesto that is presented to the Government, informing them of the beliefs of young people across the country.
What does the UKYP do in Somerset? In Somerset there are four Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs). The Somerset constituencies are: 1.Mendip 2.Sedgemoor 3.South Somerset 4.Taunton Deane & West Somerset 1 2 4 3
What does the UKYP do in Somerset? Somerset also an Advisory Group of 30 young people who act as a reference group for the MYPs The MYPs all have manifesto issues which they campaign on. For the last two years, Somerset’s focus has been on: 1.Media image of young people 2.Bullying 3.Transport 4.Places to go, things to do
What does the UKYP do in Somerset? Somerset UKYP also acts a representative voice for young people in Somerset, taking part in: • Decision making (such as youth grant giving) • Consultations • Interviews • And much, much more • See the Achievement List for more detailed information
The electionprocess… • MYPs and Deputies are elected through schools, colleges and youth clubs • You can get involved as a candidate or a voter - both roles are vitally important • You can nominate yourself for consideration as an MYP by completing a nomination form and handing it in. The deadline for handing in nomination forms is 16 November 2012
The election process (2) • If you nominate yourself, you must attend the Selection Day on 15th December • At the Selection Day, six candidates from each constituency are chosen to go forward to the Somerset-wide election • Candidates then create a manifesto on Saturday 12th January 2013. All candidates must attend this day • The manifestos will be distributed to schools in January and February. Elections will take place in schools and youth clubs from 11th to 22nd February 2013
After the elections… • The outcome will be announced at the Results Evening at County Hall on Thursday 7th March • All MYPs and Deputies go on a residential from 15th to 17th March 2013 with newly elected MYPs and Deputies from across the South West region • If you don’t get elected and still want to be involved, you can join the UKYP Advisory Group. Contact Kirstie (see later slide for details)
What’s expected of an MYP? • You represent young people in your area, so you need to be willing to talk to people and take their views on board • Attend the monthly UKYPAG meetings and regional meetings every half term • Attend the Regional Residential (15th – 17th March 2013) • Attend the Annual Sitting in July • Be prepared to attend other meetings that crop up • Work !!!!! But you do have the support of a youth worker and the UKYP Advisory Group (a group of young people who want to help).
