Three Estates of Middle Ages • Clergy – Save souls, church people (Latin) • Nobles – Purpose to protect, bring justice, uphold laws (French) • Commoners – Work to feed/cloth all (English)
7 Deadly Sins • Each character is associated with one or more sins. These sins are: • Pride • Greed • Wrath • Envy • Gluttony • Sloth • Lust
4 Humours • Each character can also have one or more humours. These are associated with an element, bodily fluid, and a quality. • Blood Air Happy • Yellow Bile Fire Violent • Phlegm Water Coward • Black Bile Earth Lazy
Wheel of Fortune • The belief that people start out at the top, crash to the bottom and then rise to the top again. • What goes around comes around.
The Pardoner’s Tale • 3 Rioters are drinking and see a funeral • Want to find Death • See an old man who points them out to a tree • Under the tree are bushels of florins • 2 of the rioters plan to stab the other rioter • Other rioter plans to poison the other rioter’s beer
The Pardoner’s Tale (cont.) • When the one rioter returns he is stabbed to death • Other rioters drink the beer after killing him and die due to the poison in the beers • Nobody receives the florins

Friar • Name is Hubert • White neck (coward) • Greedy • A flirt • Uses job for monetary gain instead of church reasons • Member of Clergy • Sins: Greed and Phlegm
Oxford Cleric • Peasant born student • Smart • Spends money on books • Always paid his debts and always prayed • Sins: Gluttony and Pride • Humours: Phlegm
Merchant • Convinces others that he is an expert in finance • Secretly in debt • Solemn, serious, intelligent and cunning • Does excellent business as a merchant
Monk • Loved hunting • Dressed in nice clothing, some had furs • Fat, jolly, bald headed • Ignored rules of monastery, many actions are in violation of his monastic vows • Sins: Gluttony • Humours: Black Bile
Parson • Very poor • Principle is to live life perfectly then teach by example • Cared for his parishioners • Humble • Wanted everyone to do well • Sin: Sloth • Humours: Blood
Pardoner • Sold pardons and indulgences to those charged with sins • Knew how to sing and preach to people to buy his fake relics • Made a lot of money selling fake relics • No beard, high voice, long hair • Sins: Greed and Gluttony
The Miller • Drunk and Belligerent • Obnoxious and talks loud • He speaks of a carpenter and his wife. • The Miller speaks what is on his mind without a problem
