How is leadership changing? Shift in technology after the late 90’s has changed almost all company’s way of operating Internet has led to globalization and shifted towards customer-driven organizations Teams often outsourced or not all in one central location anymore
What is E-Leadership? E-leadership requires more of a leader because there is not a face-to-face interaction Person must have strong interconnectedness over employee or company at all times
Problems with E-Leadership Structure of words can negatively impact what the leader is trying to convey Assumptions must sometimes be made A.K.A. – “Reading between the lines” Always at a distance Can sometimes be less personal Body Language can be hard to detect
Virtual Teams Interact over a database (email, online text forum, threaded discussions) Mostly text based, some video based Leaders provide structures, motivate and engage team members Leaders attend to socio-emotional aspects of team
Strong Transformational E-Leaders Recognizing the reliability of one’s status (both of the leader and the follower) Strong ability to adapt to frequent change Frequency of intervention Small delays between responses Being (almost) always available Must be a “negotiating agent” and understanding of their team
