Teacher Goal To learn and hone strategies that will help students improve open-ended response and essay scores on the 10th grade TAKS test.
Student Goal To improve the open-ended response and essay scores on the 10th Grade TAKS test.
Data Analysis • We used district-wide TAKS Essay Scores. • Our Teacher Goal was to improve our strategies for teaching TAKS Essays. • We chose to pursue the student and teacher goals by using Gretchen Bernabei’s Reviving the Essay TAKS Writing Structures.
2 SECTIONS OF ENGLISH II SAME STUDENTS USED WHICH WERE IN CLASS CONTINUOSLY FOR THREE ESSAYS 1ST PERIOD- 23 STUDENTS 2ND PERIOD- 16 STUDENTS Scores: A= 3 OR 4 B= 2 C= 1 F= 0 or did not turn in DATA
Progress Report • While most of our teachers saw an improvement in student Writing TAKS Scores on Benchmark tests.
Conclusions and Future Plans • We have found that with new teaching strategies, students can and will improve their TAKS Writing scores. • Our future plans include: continued use of Gretchen Bernabei’s TAKS Writing Structures, andparticipation in future Gretchen Bernabei TAKS Writing Workshops.
FUTURE GOALS • Next year, we will be able to apply these methodologies and begin analyzing the data much earlier in the school year. • For continuous improvement, we would also like to collect data from the students about which strategies work best for them. • After looking at this year’s TAKS results, we will have a clearer understanding of how effective these teaching methods are and can alter our plan of action accordingly.
