  1. 12 Months Progress Meeting LIFE - EcoDefatting INESCOP PROJECT PROGRESS Environmentally friendly natural products instead of chemical products in the degreasing phase of the tanning cycle LIFE 13 ENV/IT/470 Mercedes Roig INESCOP NEWPORT Santa Croce sull’Arno - Pisa (Italy) 22nd October 2015 1

  2. Tasks carried out by INESCOP (Feb – Sep’15) 2

  3. B1. Demonstration of natural products in the defatting phase at laboratory level Objectives: • Obtain leathers defatted with last EcoDefatting products sintetized by UNIFI (EDF19 - EDF24) Tasks: • Definition of the leather defatting process: depickling, defatting, pickling and tanning • Defatting test with last EcoDefatting products at laboratory level (EDF19 - EDF24) Test & ResultS & control sheet

  4. Trials with EcoDefatting products EcoDefatting products tested: • EDF 19 to EDF 24

  5. Defatting procedure

  6. Defatting results: fat removed from skins

  7. Defatting results: physical properties (I)

  8. Defatting results: physical properties (II)

  9. C2. Monitoring of the environmental impact at laboratory level Objective: Quantify and evaluate the environmental impact of defatting residual baths from commercial and natural products (EDF1-EDF25) Tasks: Chemical analysis of defatting residual baths by means of standard methods: COD, BOD and biodegradability Responsible: INESCOP

  10. COD results

  11. BOD results

  12. Biodegradability results

  13. Action B.2: Defatting at semi-industrial level by using natural products Tasks:- Definition of the leather defatting process: depickling, defatting, pickling and tanning - Perform defatting test on pickled sheep-skins at semi-industrial level with the selected product (EDF20), - Evaluate the effectiveness of the product in different quantities (2, 3, 4 and 5% on weight of skin inside the tanning drum) Objectives: - To obtain leathers defatted at semi-industrial level with the product selected as optimum (EDF20)

  14. Defatting results: fat removed from skins

  15. Defatting results: physical properties (I)

  16. Defatting results: physical properties (II)

  17. C3. Monitoring of the environmental impact at semi-industrial level Objective: Quantify and evaluate the environmental impact of defatting stage with the product selected as optimum (EDF20) in different quantities (2, 3, 4 and 5% on weight of skin) Tasks: Chemical analysis of defatting residual baths by means of standard methods: COD, BOD and biodegradability Responsible: INESCOP
