  1. Station 4RAVEN AND THE SOURCES OF LIGHT EQ: How do myths explain origins of natural elements?

  2. Materials you will need: SpringBoard book Pencil Notebook paper (journal)

  3. Stories that explain natural phenomena exist in all cultures. In Native American mythology, the raven is often considered the creator of the earth and is sometimes called “Grandfather Raven.” In some stories, though, Raven is a trickster, who cannot be trusted. In this story, “Raven and the Sources of Light,” Raven is both a benevolent creator and a trickster.

  4. Complete the graphic organizer on page 76 of your SpringBoard book. Look over the elements of nature. Explain how people in the distant past might have explained the origins of these natural phenomena. You may discuss your explanations with the members in your group, but everyone needs to complete the graphic organizer.

  5. Now turn to page 78 of your SpringBoard book. Begin reading “Raven and the Sources of Light.” Each person in your group must read a part of the story. As you are reading, use the graphic organizer on page 77 to track the significant actions of Raven in each of his transformations.

  6. When your group has finished reading the story, turn to page 76 of your SpringBoard book. Extended Writing Response: Choose one natural phenomena from the chart on page 76. How would the people who told this story of Raven might explain the element you chose from the chart? Your response must be at least 15 sentences.

  7. Complete the mythology graphic organizer on Raven and the Sources of Light.
