CMP211 – Operating Systems INTRODUCTION TO LINUX Host :Department of Computer Science Instructor :Mfawa Alfred Onen (a.k.a Muffy) Email : systemadmin@binghamuni.edu.ng
1) • INTRODUCTION • What is Linux? • History of Linux • Difference between Linux and UNIX • Types of Linux vs. Windows • Comparison of Linux vs. Windows • Strengths and weaknesses of Linux • Which Linux should I use? • Some useful Linux links
What is Linux? • Open Source Unix-like operating system kernel.
History of Linux Linux was first released by its inventor Linus Torvalds in 1991. Combining the Linux kernel with the GNU software forms the basis of the operating system family generally known as 'Linux'
Difference between Linux and UNIX • Unix requires a more powerful hardware configuration • Linux however, (which is built on the concept of Unix) has small hardware requirements • and it will work on both a large mainframe computer and an x86 based personal computer.
Comparison of Linux vs. Windows • Linux has many distributors like Radhat, Canonical, Novell etc whereas windows has only Micrsoft. • One more major difference is Linux works on both GUI & Console mode but windows only GUI. • Linux have multiuser, multitasking, multiprocessing, multiprogramming features while windows limits users by using License. • Support In windows is better and reliable than Linux since you Pay them to do the job.
Strengths and weaknesses of Linux • Strengths • Stability. • Low cost. • Integration with the internet. • Good availability of network and server software. • Weaknesses • Fewer desktop software titles than Windows (but improving). • Less user-friendly than Windows (but improving).
Which Linux should I use? • Any Linux Distribution (Distro) that suites your purpose of use is fine.
