  1. Monday 17 OctoberTopic: Cellular Respiration DO NOW: Brainstorm everything that you can about energy. Think about things such as where it comes from, how it becomes available, how does it change into other forms, what is it used for, what types there are, etc. HW: • 8-1 Reading for Understanding

  2. Objective • By the end of this class, you will be able to write the chemical equation for cell respiration and identify its reactants and products. Agenda • Notes on cell respiration

  3. Why do we need energy? • So we can reproduce • So we can move around • So we can interact with surroundings • So our cells can function • Thinking

  4. In what form is energy available? • Glucose • Proteins, carbohydrates • Food • Solar • Electric, water, chemical • Wind, lithium ,nuclear, • maltose

  5. How does our body convert this energy? • ENERGY MUST BE IN CHEMICAL FORM FOR US TO USE IT!!!!!!!! • ATP (adenosine tri phosphate), • Mitochondria makes ATP (through metabolism) • Oxygen and glucose are converted into energy and waste

  6. Where do the waste products go? • 2 waste products • Carbon dioxide (exhale) • Water (urinate, sweating, exhale)

  7. THE FORMULA!!! • O2 + C6H12O6 ATP + H2O + CO2 + heat

  8. Tuesday 18 OctoberTopic: Exercise, Cell Respiration, and your body DO NOW: Pick up a packet from the kidney table and complete the front page (“pre-lab”). You should fill in the blanks and write hypotheses for how exercise affects the body. Jhon will come around and collect the 8-1 reading hw quickly and quietly HW: • Reflections and conclusions questions

  9. Objective • Explain how the chemical equation for cell respiration relates to breathing, and why we breathe harder during exercise. Agenda • Protocol for outdoor activity • How to measure a pulse • Outside activity!

  10. Before going outside… • You only need to bring your lab and a pencil and can leave everything else here • We go out the back stairs, out the door, and around to the crosswalk • Line up with your partner along the edge of the basketball court by the red stairs • Once everyone completes the activity, listen for me to say “Now” and “End” which will be the timed minute for pulse • Swap with your partner

  11. Now… • Take a seat, chill, start quietly writing your answers 

  12. Thursday 20 OctoberTopic: Burning food compared to cellular respiration DO NOW: Take a copy of today’s activity and complete the 3 pre-lab questions Have your hw out for collection HW: • Complete any lab questions that were not done during class • Study for tomorrow’s quiz (shorter)

  13. Objective • By the end of this class, you will be able to identify 3 similarities and 3 differences between burning food and cell respiration by igniting a Frito chip. Agenda • Recap of outdoor activity • Silent reading • Lab protocol • Lab PART II (as a demo) • Lab part I (in groups) • Review for quiz tomorrow

  14. Outdoor activity recap • What are the key points to take away? • Exercises increase heart rate carries oxygen to cells • Carbon dioxide from cells • Breathing rate increases to get more oxygen to make more energy

  15. Silent reading • In order to best understand today’s lab and to answer all the questions properly, you will need additional information. • The last page of your lab packet was copied from the text • Turn to it and read silently for 5 minutes

  16. Part II – Measuring the Calories in Food calorie – amount of energy needed to raise the temp of one gram of water by one degree celsius Calorie (aka kilocalorie) – 1000 calories Quantitative Data: Volume of water 100 mL = 100 grams Starting temp of water: 22 celsius Ending temp of water: 27 celsius Change in temperature: 5 degrees

  17. Lab Protocol • All bags, extra papers, etc must be off the lab table • Any hair long enough is to be tied back • IMPERATIVE that people stay in their seats • Steps: • Secure the frito into the holder apparatus • Have a cup of water ready to drop match into • Once I see that all groups are ready, I will distribute a match to each group • Light the frito FROM THE BOTTOM, drop the match into the water, observe the reaction and then fill in the table accordingly.

  18. DIFFERENCES: • Cell respiration produces water • Cell respiration produces ATP • Burning produces carbon monoxide SIMILARITIES: • Require oxygen • Burn glucose • Produce heat • Convert one form of energy to another

  19. Cell Respiration Review • With a partner, spend 15 minutes filling in the study guide questions

  20. 1. What is ATP and how is it used in cells? • ATP is chemical energy and is used to power everything in the cell and the body.

  21. 2. What is the purpose of cell respiration? • The purpose of cell respiration is to make usable energy.

  22. 3. Where does cell respiration happen? • It happens in the mitochondria.

  23. 4. What are the starting materials and end products for cell respiration? • The starting materials are as follows: Oxygen and Glucose The products are:Water, ATP, energy, carbon dioxide, and heat.

  24. 5. How is cell respiration similar to and different from actually burning food?

  25. 6. What is a calorie? • A calorie is one gram of water heated by one degree Celsius.

  26. 7. How does exercise influence cell respiration? Why? • It makes you need more glucose and oxygen, and the rate of cell respiration will increase.

  27. Friday 21 OctoberTopic: Cell Respiration Review & Quiz DO NOW: Get a clicker from the kidney table Take out your notes on cell respiration HW: • Read 38-1 and take notes in your notebook • Think of a food/meal that contains carbohydrates, lipids (fats), and proteins. Write it down after your reading notes!

  28. Objective • By the end of this class, you will be able to apply knowledge of cellular respiration to answer short-answer and open-response questions on the quiz Agenda • Cell respiration review • Quiz

  29. 1. What do you call the starting materials in a chemical equation? 30 • Products • Ingredients • Reactants • Starters 26

  30. 2. What are the reactants incellular respiration? 30 • O2 and CO2 • O2 and Glucose • Glucose and ATP • CO2, H2O, ATP, and heat 27

  31. 3. What are the products incellular respiration? 30 • O2 and CO2 • O2 and Glucose • Glucose and ATP • CO2, H2O, ATP, and heat 25

  32. 4. What is the purpose of cellular respiration? Why is it important? 30 • To help us breathe • To make glucose for cells • To make ATP for cells • To take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide 26

  33. 5. The organelle where cell respiration takes place is the 30 • Nucleus • Lysosome • Chloroplast • Vacuole • Mitochondrion • Ribosome 26

  34. 6. Why do some cells have more mitochondria than other cells? 30 • The cells use more energy • The cells store more nutrients • The cells degrade more proteins • The cells divide more frequently 25

  35. 7. A poison that prevents cell respiration in mitochondria will affect the production of… 30 • ATP • Glucose • Oxygen • RNA 26

  36. 8. Choose the correct statement about photosynthesis and cell respiration: 30 • Both in same organelle • Both happen in all living things • P produces carbon dioxide, and CR uses carbon dioxide • P stores energy and CR releases energy 0
