How does our body convert this energy? • ENERGY MUST BE IN CHEMICAL FORM FOR US TO USE IT!!!!!!!! • ATP (adenosine tri phosphate), • Mitochondria makes ATP (through metabolism) • Oxygen and glucose are converted into energy and waste

Before going outside… • You only need to bring your lab and a pencil and can leave everything else here • We go out the back stairs, out the door, and around to the crosswalk • Line up with your partner along the edge of the basketball court by the red stairs • Once everyone completes the activity, listen for me to say “Now” and “End” which will be the timed minute for pulse • Swap with your partner

Silent reading • In order to best understand today’s lab and to answer all the questions properly, you will need additional information. • The last page of your lab packet was copied from the text • Turn to it and read silently for 5 minutes
Part II – Measuring the Calories in Food calorie – amount of energy needed to raise the temp of one gram of water by one degree celsius Calorie (aka kilocalorie) – 1000 calories Quantitative Data: Volume of water 100 mL = 100 grams Starting temp of water: 22 celsius Ending temp of water: 27 celsius Change in temperature: 5 degrees
Lab Protocol • All bags, extra papers, etc must be off the lab table • Any hair long enough is to be tied back • IMPERATIVE that people stay in their seats • Steps: • Secure the frito into the holder apparatus • Have a cup of water ready to drop match into • Once I see that all groups are ready, I will distribute a match to each group • Light the frito FROM THE BOTTOM, drop the match into the water, observe the reaction and then fill in the table accordingly.
DIFFERENCES: • Cell respiration produces water • Cell respiration produces ATP • Burning produces carbon monoxide SIMILARITIES: • Require oxygen • Burn glucose • Produce heat • Convert one form of energy to another
