In early societies, government as we know it did not exist. Families or tribal leaders made decisions for the good of the people.
As civilizations grew, governments developed to organize society. It is a system that directly controls aspects of society to keep the people safe.(definition) They were necessary to protect people from threatening invaders. As society has become more advanced so has government and its purpose.
GOVERNMENTS MAIN ROLES There are many types of governments in the world, however, they share some main roles. First, a main function of government is to protect citizens from outside threats. Secondly, governments balance the rights of individuals against the needs of the whole society. (the good of everyone over the good of one person.)
GOVERNMENTS MAIN ROLES • A third role of government is preserving internal order. (keep order to the country)This ideal will differ also between governments. • For example in a democracy, it means prosecuting criminals. In a dictatorship it means prosecuting dissenters (those opposed to the government). • All modern governments provide some form of social services. Example: education, health care, unemployment checks, etc.
GOVERNMENTS MAIN ROLES • Another role is an involvement in the national economies. • This can be anything from completely controlling the economy (communism) to allowing a free market to operate (democracy). • Governments also regulate (control) the private lives of their citizens. An example would be issuing a social security number for tax purposes in the US, through enforcing specific styles of dress in a theocracy.
