Upper MakefIeldBasketBALL Refereeing Overview
This Session will cover: • Age Group Overview/Rules for Upper MakefieldIntramural • 2nd Grade • 3/4 Grade • 5/6 Grade • 7-12th Boys only • Expectations for Referees • Basic Calls • Special Situations • WhoM to Contact with Any Issues
AGE GROUP Overview: 2nd Grade • You will not be asked to referee any 2nd grade games. Parents/coaches referee at this age group so they can instruct on the court.
AGE GROUP Overview: 3rd and 4th Grade • Players are combined for both 3rd and 4th grade players (both genders) • Play is at Sol Feinstone Elementary on Saturdays, but occasional games may occur at Goodnoe Elementary and Newtown Elementary – be sure you know the location! • Baskets are lowered to 9 feet – unless both coaches agree before the game NOT to lower the baskets. This may vary by skill level and/or gender. If coaches do not BOTH agree to keep baskets at full height, league policy is to lower to 9 Feet. • Review RULES for 3/4th grade – only man-to-man defense is permitted and no pressing is allowed. Defense must be played inside the 3 point arc (if not marked on the gym floor, estimate the range and keep consistent for both teams throughout game) • For more advanced players, call every travel, double dribble, etc. but for newer players, you can blow the whistle to give a reminder every so often, but do not call every mistake as they are learning.
AGE GROUP Overview: 5th and 6th Grade • Players are combined for both 5th and 6thgrade players (both genders) • Play is at Grey Nun Academy on Saturdays • Baskets are kept at full height • Review RULES for 5/6th grade – only man-to-man defense is permitted and pressing is only allowed for the last 2 minutes of the game. Defense is played inside the 3 point arc early in the season – this rule may be waived later in the season if BOTH coaches agree to allow defense once past half court. • For more advanced players, call every travel, double dribble, etc. but for newer players, you can blow the whistle to give a reminder every so often, but do not call every mistake as they are learning. Later in the season, you can call most everything (but use your discretion for player with special learning needs).
AGE GROUP Overview: 7th-12th Grade • Players are combined for 7th – 12th grade players (Boys only) • Play is at Goodnoe Elementary on Sundays • Baskets are kept at full height • Full court play is permitted • For more advanced players, call every travel, double dribble, etc. but for newer players, you can blow the whistle to give a reminder every so often, but do not call every mistake as they are learning. Later in the season, you can call most everything (but use your discretion for player with special learning needs).
Expectations of Referees • Arrive 10 minutes early and see how you can help • put our chairs or bleachers • plug in clock • place sponsor banner under the clock for everyone to see • check in with the coaches about rules/expectations for this age group • if coaches are not on the same page about where to play defense or the height of the baskets, ALWAYS default to the rules and tell the coaches they should approach their age group coordinator after the game with any concerns • start the game on time – set 3 min for half time • check in with coaches at half time to see if they have any suggestions for you • Blow your whistle loudly when you make a call and make it clear what you are calling • Report ANY issues to Alan Jett or Ed Mancinelli (see contact info at end of this presentation)
