Some Major Challenges Nigerian data from www.cia.gov website
Small Volume Blood: Aftermath of No Blood Phenomenon Volunteer Blood Outside/Paid Blood Outside/Paid Blood Volunteer Blood Other Consequences include higher risk of TTIs
Transfusion Challenges • < 10% of blood is donated voluntarily • Many “donations” are solicited from-often unsavory donors by patients’ families • Blood is not uniformly tested for HIV, HBV, or HCV – especially in outlying regions • Crossmatching of RBCs and whole blood too often is performed inadequately
Transfusion Challenges • Blood bag labeling too often is performed inaccurately • Blood too often is stored or transported inappropriately • Blood too often is utilized inappropriately • Transfusion reactions usually go undiagnosed and unmanaged
Transfusion Challenges • Insufficient blood is available to meet the needs of all patients – particularly in emergencies • Most hospitals do not have transfusion committees • The costs of blood often are often borne entirely/primarily by the patient • Most hospitals do not have adequate access to blood components
FA Fasola et al. Audit of the Red Cell Units Supply of a Busy Hospital Blood Bank in Nigeria. Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice 2009; 12: 165-168. “The demand is three times greater than the supply of blood.”
The Safe Blood Africa Project • MISSION: To improve the safety and expand the availability of blood in Nigeria. • VISION: To be the model provider of medical and technical assistance and resources as we use all means at our disposal to improve transfusion-related healthcare in Nigeria. • GOAL: To assist our in-country colleagues in the development of exemplary and sustainable medical-technical programs aimed at improving blood safety and availability throughout Nigeria.
Objectives of the Safe Blood Africa Project • Develop a training and educational program designed to enhance the knowledge and experience of existing health-care personnel in pertinent aspects of blood banking. • Provide suitable technology, equipment, and supplies to support the above. • Work closely with Nigerian colleagues, in a “train-the-trainers” mode, to disseminate these materials to as many deserving hospitals as possible and provide a framework for both other U.S. blood centers/transfusion services and our in-country colleagues to duplicate this work over as much of Nigeria as possible.
