EL Program Goals - GUHSD • Equity and access for all learners, and a collective schoolwide culture and sense of responsibility focused on student motivation and achievement • EL students will be provided with SDAIE to ensure they have access to the core curriculum • EL students will receive instruction based on English proficiency levels • EL literacy plan will be effectively implemented, including development of academic language and metacognitive skills

Demographics 09-10 • Spanish 1,855 66.8% of all EL students • Chaldean 398 14.3% • Arabic 247 8.9% • Kurdish 56 2.0% • Filipino 29 1% • Total 2,776 English Learner students speaking over 35 languages (Data According to CDE Dataquest Website 2009; Projected 2010-2011 - 3000 EL students)
Educational Background of our students • Extremely Varied- • Everything from expensive English bilingual schools to years spent in transitional refugee camps (leaving multiple year gaps in education)
How do students enter our program? • Moving into our district from everywhere in the world • Living with families in our district • Seven separate feeder districts (Middle Schools)
Leveling Students-Promoted from Middle School/Transfer Students • Cumulative Folders • Middle School Teacher Recommendations • School Placement Tests
Leveling Students-Newcomers • LAS Placement Test or LAS English Test • (Language Assessment Scales from CTB McGraw Hill) • El Cajon Valley High School Math Placement Test GUHSD International Newcomer Center
EL Classes - GUHSD ESL Beginning (three levels-by semester) ELD Beginning (three levels-by semester) ESL Intermediate (three levels-by semester) ELD Intermediate (three levels-by semester) ESL Advanced (three levels-by semester) ELD Advanced (three levels-by semester) Transitional English 1 and 2 Course offerings vary by school and semester type
EL Classes – GUHSDBeginning Classes • ESL Instruction for the non-English speaking student • Oral Communication Skills • Lots of BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) • Little bit of CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency) • Vocabulary Building • Simple Writing Assignments- English sentence structure
EL Classes – GUHSDIntermediate • ESL Instruction for the Limited English Proficient Student • More emphasis on CALP; continuing BICS development • More elaborate writing assignments- paragraphs and simple essays
EL Classes – GUHSDAdvanced • ESL Instruction for the more experienced EL student • Emphasis on CALP instruction • Full essays and research papers • Coursework meets UC Graduation requirements
EL Classes – GUHSDTransitional English • Elective English course • Emphasis on improving writing skills and reading comprehension • Support for students struggling in mainstream classes • Study skill help and individualized help
Sheltered Classes – GUHSDSocial Studies • Intro to Geography • US History and Geography • American Government • Economics • World History All of the Social Studies Sheltered courses are considered Applied Arts, and do not meet UC/CSU eligibility for four year university entrance at this time.
Sheltered Classes – GUHSDScience • Non-laboratory Physical Science (not UC/CSU Eligible) • Biology (UC/CSU Eligible) • Conceptual Physics (UC/CSU Eligible) • Chemistry (UC/CSU Eligible)
Sheltered Classes – GUHSDMathematics • Non-Eligible UC/CSU Classes • Mathematics 1 and 2 • Math A1 and A2 • Basic Geometry • UC/CSU Eligible Classes • Algebra 1C • Geometry, Plane and Solid 1C
Tutoring and Special Programs - GUHSD • After school tutoring sessions • CAHSEE prep classes • Resource Centers • Adult Schools
Student Movement through the levels - GUHSD • Expected Movement • One level a year • Students coming in may test at or be placed at a different level, depending on English experience and courses available • Teacher may intercede if necessary and move students up or down with testing/evidence
Exiting the Program – GUHSDRedesignation • Redesignation to Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) • CELDT Test – all areas and overall at least Early Advanced Level • CAHSEE – passing both English and Math OR CST – Basic level or above in English and Math • Core Teacher recommendations • Core Academic Grades - • C or better in English for two semesters • C or better in History and/or Science
Student Advancement from EL classes to mainstream • Student satisfactorily completes the final Advanced ELD courses • Student then moves to mainstream English course- either grade level appropriate or otherwise, depending on the school • Students may have extra support classes like Transitional English
Students who do not finish the program… • Students may repeat ELD classes as necessary for no credit • Based on teacher recommendations and/or grades NO CAHSEE=NO GRADUATION
Hope for students who do not finish the program… • California Community Colleges • GED programs • Two Years after leaving high school to pass the CAHSEE
