  3. II. Rise of Napoleon A. Early Years 1. Born 1769 in Corsica 2. Attended military school in France 3. Became popular due to military victories against Austria, Italy, India, Egypt…

  4. B. Rise to power 1.1799- French lost faith in Directory a. Nap. overthrows Directory in a coup d'état b. Set-up 3-man governing board called Consulate w/ him as “First Consul”

  5. III. Power Through Plebiscites YES! A. 1800- Should he be given all pwr in a new constitution? B. 1802- Should he be made Consul for life? C. 1804- Should he be made emperor? 1. Significance: Republic replaced w/ absolute monarchy – WTH? YES! YES!
