  2. I. Only God possesses eternal life (John 5:24-26) 24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.

  5. I. Only God possesses eternal life (John 5:24-26) 24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. 6. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

  8. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) Eternal Life comes through Resurrection “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:40

  9. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) Eternal judgement comes through Resurrection as well 28 …an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

  10. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) The road to “the resurrection of judgment” “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” Hebrews 9:27 “The Lord knows how to…keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment.” 2 Peter 2:9 Hades/Hell described in Luke 16 as a place of “torment” as the man in Hades cried out “I am in anguish in this flame.”

  11. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) The road to “the resurrection of judgment” • The final destination for those who experience “the resurrection of judgment” • Their souls will be reunited with their resurrected bodies to experience what the Bible calls “the second death.” At this resurrection, those souls who were in Hades will be judged in their resurrected bodies, and as Revelation 20:14 teaches, they will be “thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”

  12. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) How can I live forever? “The Lord knows how to…keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment.” 2 Peter 2:9 “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:10-12 Jesus teaches in John 3:18 we are all “condemned already.”

  13. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) • How can I live forever? • The Good News! • God Himself came to our rescue “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly…God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6 & 8

  14. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) • How can I live forever? • The Good News! • “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27) so Jesus died once for all humanity and suffered, in our place, the judgment of God’s wrath we deserved so that, when we trust fully in Jesus (and none other) to have suffered our punishment for us, God does something amazing. He forgives us forever of our unrighteousness and credits us with the righteousness of His Son Jesus.

  15. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) • How can I live forever? • The Good News! • Or as 2 Corinthians 5:21 teaches, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

  16. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) • How can I live forever? • The Good News! • Jesus’ resurrected life has the power to change our destiny from “the resurrection of judgment” to “the resurrection of life.” • “whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24

  17. II. Eternal life and everlasting judgment will come through resurrection (John 5:27-29) • How can I live forever? • The Good News! “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Romans 10:13
