  1. An initiative led by UNICEF NZ to reach out to children affected by family violence

  2. Purpose The campaign aims to reach children who are confused, stressed or worried about violence in their homes, or in the neighbourhood, amongst wider whanau/friends or in the community

  3. UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC) Children have the right to: • Get and share information that is important for them • Make their opinions known and have them taken into account • Be protected from violence and abuse (Articles 12, 13, 19)

  4. What we know • Children worry about family matters and they usually tell other children before they talk to adults • They are concerned about their family and their friends and want to help • They need reassurance that they have the right to know what is going on in their family

  5. Key Messages for Kids • It is not your fault • You are not responsible for making it stop • You are allowed to find help

  6. Children told us: • They need to tell someone how they are feeling • Parents, whanau or other adults don’t always understand • Talking to someone not involved is helpful • Being reassured that it’s not their fault helps

  7. 0800Whatsup can not • Resolve the issue(s) – that’s up to the adults in the child’s life • Promise to make adults behave differently • Tell children what to do or who to go to

  8. But 0800Whatsup can • Listen, provide reassurance and help kids explore what they need • Let them know that their feelings are important, someone cares, they are not alone • Help them identify an adult(s) in their life who could help • Help to find words to ask for what they need • Stay engaged for as long as the child needs a supportive, safe listening service

  9. Children consulted for the project wanted: • A positive, strong, cheerful and empowering image and message • To be reassured that talking about their troubles was a good thing to do

  10. 0800Whatsup • Free • Available noon till midnight • Well trained, experienced • There for kids • Non directive www.BEAHERO.CO.NZ
