Healthy Active Kids • 25% of school age children in Arizona are overweight • 24% of low-income children between 3 and 5 years of age in Arizona are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. • (CDC PedNSS, 2002) • 24% of Arizona high-school students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight (CDC YRBSS, 2003)

Healthy Active Kids Workshops • Eight workshops in Tucson, Phoenix, St Johns, Sierra Vista, Kingman in 2007 • 135 participants • They rated their knowledge about promoting nutrition and physical activity behaviors in children BEFORE this program was 3.7 on 5 point scale with 5 high and 4.5 afterwards.

Quick Nutrition Messages 1.Choose theme for month. Ex. Focus on Fruits. 2.Choose the message for the current week. 3.Use the message during the school day. Examples: message on the board, reading the message over the morning announcements, 4.Use that message to generate discussion. Ex. If you want to do better in school, donユt forget to eat more fruits and veggies! Ask the students to raise their hands if they ate a fruit or a vegetable that morning.
