  1. Physical Science Strand 1 MAP Prep

  2. Strand 1 GLE 1 Identify matter as anything that has mass and volume.

  3. Your friend Jimmy Bob Jo said that your iPhone is not an example of matter. You think it is. How can you prove it? What tool would you need to use?

  4. Show your knowledge another way… • Draw a picture of something that has matter in it that you would find in the gym.

  5. Strand 1 GLE 2 Describe and compare the volumes (the amount of space an object occupies) of objects or substances directly, using a graduated cylinder, and/or indirectly, using displacement methods.

  6. Susan has a graduated cylinder that has 100 mL of water in it. She places a rock in the cylinder and finds that the rock has a volume of 40 mL. What was the total volume that Susan had seen in the graduated cylinder?

  7. Show your knowledge another way… • Draw a student using displacement to measure the volume of a rock using a graduated cylinder using a 3 box comic strip.

  8. Strand 1 GLE 13 Compare the refraction of visible light passing through different transparent and translucent materials.

  9. One way solid objects are classified is by how much light is allowed to pass through that object. • A transparent object lets all of the light pass through. • A translucent object lets some light pass through. • An opaque object lets noneof the light pass through. opaque transparent translucent

  10. Show your knowledge through drawing… Draw three drinking glasses. Show how the light reacts to an opaque surface, translucent, and transparent.

  11. Strand 1 GLE 14 Predict how different surfaces (transparent, translucent, opaque) and lenses (convex or concave) affect the behavior of visible light rays and the resulting image of an object.

  12. All the following are examples of light being refractedEXCEPT — C A B D

  13. Answer choice D is correct. The mirror is using reflection to bounce light off of its surface. next

  14. These answers are not correct because: • Answer A – Look at the bent light rays. A rainbow is the result of light being refracted. • Answer B – Look at the bent light rays. A prism bends light. • Answer C - The straw looks bent in this picture. It is an example of refraction, not reflection.

  15. Strand 1 GLE 15 Describe how sound energy is transferred by wave-like disturbances that spread away from the source through a medium.

  16. Visit this link to read more about sound waves and how they work. http://www.physicsclassroom.com/mmedia/waves/edl.cfm

  17. Strand 1 GLE 19 Observe and describe the evidence of energy transfer in a closed series circuit.

  18. The following is a link showing more information about how energy is transferred through closed circuits: http://www.furryelephant.com/content/electricity/electrical-energy/ Here is a link to build a circuit to demonstrate energy transfer: http://www.ndt-ed.org/EducationResources/HighSchool/Electricity/seriescircuit.htm
