The different forms of ‘you’ • In Spanish, there are FIVE ways to say ‘you’. • There are three singular forms • There are two plural forms. • You personally will only ever use THREE.
Singular ‘you’ • There are three ways to say “you” to one person • Tú (you must know and use this all the time) • This is considered informal • Vos (this is used in many countries in Central and South America) • It is informal…you only need to know this exists. You don’t need to use it. It has a slightly different conjugation than tú. • Ud. (usted) (You must know and use this) • It is formal (we will elaborate)
The plural ‘you’ • There are two ways to say ‘you’ to multiple people • Uds. (ustedes) • This you must know and use. • Vosotros • This you must know, but you don’t need to use. • It has a different conjugated form • It is only used in Spain.

Tú vs. Ud. In Spanish, you have to distinguish between formal and informal when you speak to someone. Tú, the INFORMAL you, is used with your friends, younger people, people you know that are your age and family members Ud., the FORMAL you, you use with adults you are not friends with and with anyone you want to show extra respect (business settings, professional settings, work setting)
Which ‘you’ would you use? • Choose between tú, Ud. or Uds. (since we will not actually use vos or vosotros) • You are talking to your mom • You are talking to an adult store employee • You are at work and working with a group of customers • You are talking to your boss • You are talking to your friend
