The LDE was designed to recognize student’s ability to prepare and present factual information in the form of a speech on a specific Ag issue in a well thought out and logical manner. • Thought to heighten one’s confidence and hone interview skills, thus greater preparing them for future encounters as such. Based on advancing the top two • District • Area • State • National • As example: at the State Level • 2 Contestants & 1 Alternate from each area compete Contestants
Application for registration • State: completed online via judgingcard.com by June 1st • Entry fee must be paid • State: $40 • Member of the FFA • Current enrollment in AFNR course • Verified by submitted transcript Contest Entry
12 topics are prepared by the superintendent of the event prior to the event. • Topics are broken down into 4 categories • Agriscience & Technology • Ag-Marketing & International Ag Relations • Food & Fiber Systems • Urban Agriculture Topics
Contestants will randomly draw 3 of the prepared topics, from which are based on one of the 4 categories. • The student/contestant will then choose 1 of the 3 to research and speak on. • All three will be put back into the drawing for the other contestants to choose from. • This process will continue until all contestants have drawn a topic to speak upon. Contestants are given 30 minutes of prep time prior to speaking. • The first will enter the prep room 30 min prior to the event and the others in 15 min intervals. • They will research topics from materials brought to the event. • Allowed to take notes to better organize their speech. • Given note taking materials Preparation
Allowed to bring in reference material with which to research topic. • Must be printed material and fit with guidelines of the contest. • Item limit; page limit; table of contest/index; etc. • Industry or academic websites may be used but URL’s might be subject to verification by the superintendent. • Contestant’s materials will be screened 10 times prior to entering the holding room. Time limit • Minimum = 4 minutes • Maximum = 6 minutes • Point deductions for time • Follow up Questioning • 5 minutes Time
Scored based on rubric • Involves several criteria • See provided handout • 1000 point total • 50% based on two criteria: • Relating content to topic • Response to closing questions Scoring
