Biography • Born January 14,1928 in New York City • Went to Columbia University studying photography • His work appears in the book Public Relations • Also featured in the Museum Of Modern Art in New York Garry Winogrand 1968 self-portrait
Style/Influences • Portrayal of America mid 20th century • Took photos of the visual cacophony of the city streets, rodeos, airports, and animals. • Depicts social issues and the role of media in shaping attitudes • Walker Evans and Robert Frank were inspiration but Winogrand’s photos were stylistically different
Untitled Taken at New York, 1950’s This photo uses natural lighting but the building on the left seems to block some of the light. I think the photographer was trying to communicate that it was a fun day. The main subject is the man in the air. What makes the photo stand out is that the photo was taken while the guy was in mid air. I chose this photo because the photo looked fun and energetic.
Apollo 11 Moon shot Cape Kennedy Florida 1969 Taken at Cape Kennedy Used natural lighting The main subject is all the people taking pictures The photographer might be trying to communicate how excited people were. I chose this photo because what caught my interest was everyone looking up in the same direction.
World’s Fair Taken in New York, 1964 The main subject of the photo is the people on the bench. This photo uses natural light I like this photo because it seems busy with all the people in the background. The photographer is trying to communicate that maybe it was a fun/busy fair.
Couple At Zoo Taken at the zoo in New York, 1962 The main subject is the couple. The lighting is natural and it adds shadows in places which adds some extra details. I selected this photo because I like how the wolf is in the background. The photographer might be trying to communicate that extra little things in the background can make a picture stand out.
Liquidnight Taken at the Bronx Zoo,1969 The main subject is the people and the lion. The lighting is coming from inside the building, yet the photo seems a bit dark. The photographer is trying to communicate the people’s reactions to the lion. I chose this photograph because I like lions and this picture stood out to me.
