  3. ICE quote Review • I = Introduce Introduce the quote by giving background information your reader needs to understand what is going on in your quote • C=CiteGive credit to the author or show which character is speaking, use the exact word-for-word passage that you are using. Put quotes around the passage. Put a page number in parenthesis (1) after the quote. • E=Explain Explain why that quote supports your opinion on the topic. How does that quote prove you are right?

  4. Remember… • The purpose of an ICE quote is to show your reader why your position is right. • You should have stated your position in the topic sentence.

  5. ICE quote practice • On the following slide there will be a topic sentence and a passage from the story. Your job is to use the topic sentence and the passage to create an ICE quote.

  6. Example: ICE it! • Mr. White from “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs can be described in the story as practical. • Passage from story: It seems to me I’ve got all I want. As found on page 91 Mr. White from “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs can be described as practical. In the story Herbert urges his father to make a wish. Mr. White is reluctant to wish and reflects, “It seems to me I’ve got all I want” (91). In other words, Mr. White feels he should wish carefully since he is content in the beginning and doesn’t want to rush into a wish.

  7. Your turn! • Topic sentence: Mr. Peters from the story, “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken is characterized as conflicted. • Passage from story: Now he understood that Leita was really a swan from the forest, and this made him very sad because when a human being marries a bird it always leads to sorrow. As found on page 104. • Directions: Rewrite the topic sentence and use the passage to write an ICE quote. • YOU DO NOT NEED TO FINISH THE PARAGRAPH. Just write the topic sentence and ICE your quote. So, you probably are writing only 5 sentences. • Complete in Pages and send as a Word Document. • Send to nmaist@mypanthers.org • H, Last Name, First Name, TW ICE Quote
