ICTs and Improving ROAD SAFETY-How far? ITU-T SG 12 Chairman: Kwame Baah-Acheamfuor Lead Study Group on Driver Distraction & In-car Communications
How we love ICTs • Video on Texting when Driving
Distraction in Numbers Source: United States Department of Transport 2006
Safety Advocates on Use of ICTs • Worldwide Safety and Health Advocates for their concern on driver distraction, have been successful with more than 40 countries to restrict or prohibit the use of handheld phones while driving.
Automakers on Road Safety • Automakers, Service providers and High-tech companies are pushing forward to bring other potentially distracting services and gadgets, including access to the World Wide Web and e-mail, 3D maps/navigation and high-definition video, to the front seat.
ITU and Road Safety • FG CARCOM • Created in 2009 to encourage the participation in this activity of members of other standards organizations involved in car and Telecommunications/ICT industries, including experts and individuals who may not be members of ITU. • FG Driver Distraction • Created in 2011 has been instrumental in raising awareness around ITU-T activity on driver distraction and the scale of this workload, as well as in providing clear direction to ITU-T’s driver-distraction work plan.
FG CARCOM • Draft Recommendation P.VSSR • Will guarantee a high quality speech communication in cars and will lead to significantly reduced driver distraction due to poor audio (communicational) quality in cars.
FG Distraction • G.SAM (Mechanisms for managing the situational awareness of drivers) will define mechanisms for prioritizing navigation • G.V2A (Communications interface between external applications and a Vehicle Gateway Platform) will define the communications interface between the app and the driver-vehicle interface (DVI) • P.UIA (User Interface requirements for Automotive applications) will recommend characteristics of the auditory social media message
How you can contribute • Contributions from Member States as well as Industry Partners to progress and conclude standards whose implementation will avert driver distraction and ensure road safety. • Member States and industry partners to promote the use of safe interfaces and hands-free devices in vehicles and take action to eliminate technology-related distractions while driving. • Member States to promote national policies to encourage the use of ICT in enhancing road safety.
Wayforward • Partnership with the automotive sector and with automobile associations worldwide under the banner of the F.I.A. – the International Automobile Federation • Be our partner too
Thank you for your attention • Be safe on the Roads with ICTs….
