What does it mean to be a Christian? • The word Christian is from the Greek word christianos(“like the Anointed” or “follower of the Anointed” or “follower of the Christ”) • In Antioch the disciples were first called Christians. (Acts 11:26) • Believers in Jesus were first called followers of the Way (Acts 9:2; 19:9,23; 24:14,22)
What is the way of Jesus? • Spending time in solitude with the Father • Showing love and compassion to people in need • Spending time in community with others • Regularly going to synagogue or temple to worship
Solitary religion is not to be found there. “Holy solitaries” is a phrase no more consistent with the gospel than Holy Adulterers. The gospel of Christ knows of no religion, but social; no holiness but social holiness. Faith working by love, is the length and breadth and depth and height of Christian perfection. John Wesley
Hebrews 10:23-25 23 Let’s hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, because the one who made the promises is reliable.
24 And let us consider each other carefully for the purpose of sparking love and good deeds.
25 Don’t stop meeting together with other believers, which some people have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead, encourage each other, especially as you see the day drawing near.
