9th Exchange MeetingTuesday 6 June 2006 Saturated and unsaturated behaviour in the engineered components
Repositories rely on a multi-function system • The geological barrier • Boom Clay • The engineered components • Each component can fulfill or contribute to different safety functions • Different components can contribute to the same safety function • Long term compatibility throughout the repository system
Many engineered components are involved in a repository Short term: unsaturated phase Long term: saturated phase Shaft sealing Disposal galleries Backfill of access gallery Disposal gallery plug
Engineered components for the Belgian reference case consists in : • Carbon steel overpack • Concrete buffer • Stainless steel envelop • Annular backfill • Gallery lining • Plugs • Backfill materials • Sealing materials
Ensuring that each component will perform its desired function requires the knowledge of: • Unsaturated and saturated behaviourof the components • Interactions between the components • Lab and in-situ characterisation • Modelling
Different types of backfilling and sealing materials were already studied (1) • Bentonite powder/pellets mixture: Bacchus 2, Reseal • Bentonite blocks: Ophelie mock-up CEA/SCK Patent – Dardaine & Volckaert
Different types of backfilling and sealing materials were already studied (2) • Shot powder (ESDRED) • Bentonite • Sand • Cement • Mixture • Grout (ESDRED)
Great efforts were placed in modelling since 1990 • Catsius Clay EC project“Calculation and testing of behaviour of unsaturated clay as barrier in radioactive waste repositories” • Code Brigth (UPC) • Lagamine (ULg)
THM unsaturated behaviour in porous materials – Important issues for a repository – X. Ling Li • RESEAL: A large scale shaft sealing experiment – M. Van Geet • TH concrete behaviour – S. Poyet • SUPERCONTAINER main body concrete modelisation – J. Bel
