EMINTS -- Professional Development for Educators By Educators http://www.emints.org/equipment/Epson5350/filter.shtml Step 1 How often you clean the filter on an ELP5350 will depend on the classroom environment. An environment that has minimal dust will be cleaned less often than an environment that has a lot of chalk dust. Epson recommends that the air filter in the Epson ELP-5350 projector be cleaned every 100 hours of usage. Another way to tell when the filter needs to be cleaned is when dust accumulates at the fan exhaust port of the projector. If the filter is not cleaned periodically, it can become clogged with dust, preventing proper air ventilation within the projector and causing overheating, which will damage the projector. If the projector does become overheated and damaged, Epson will not honor their warranty on the projector. Before you unplug any cables from the back of the Epson projector, it is recommended that you make a diagram of the cables and what inputs the cables are attached to on the projector Turn off the projector and disconnect the main power cable. Remove all remaining cables on the back of the projector. Make sure to record the sequence and cable connections on a sheet of paper. Using a stepladder, carefully climb the stepladder and look at the mount connecting the projector to the pipe. You will notice two mounting plates. The first mounting plate is connected to the 1 ½" pipe. The second mounting plate is connected to the base of the projector. You will be working with the second plate. You will find that there are six thumbscrews located at the top of the second plate, three on each side toward the front and rear of the projector. You will also notice a notch located near the thumbscrews. All the notches are located in the same direction on the mounting plate. Step 2 Loosen the thumbscrews counter clockwise approximately halfway. Do not remove the screws all the way from the mounting plate. You will notice that the projector will become loose on the mount but will not come off the mount. Next, gently push the projector up slightly and slide the projector away from the notches. The thumbscrews will then be allowed to drop through the open holes in the mount plate. The projector will then become free from the mount plate that is attached to the pipe. Place the projector on a nearby table. Step 3 With the mounting plate on top of the projector, use a Philips screwdriver and remove the four Philips screws, silver in color, located at each corner of the mounting plate. Once the mounting plate is removed, you will have access to the filter cover Step 4 Using the handle on the projector, stand the projector on its side.Note: Standing the projector with the handle at the top keeps the dust from getting inside the projector housing. Next, remove the filter cover by pulling up on the filter cover tab. The filter is attached to the inside of the filter cover. Be careful not to let any dust fall into the housing of the projector. Once the filter is removed from the projector, you may use compressed air to clean the filter or a small vacuum cleaner designed for computers and other office equipment to clean the filter. If you don't have either one of these available, you may use a dry, lint free cloth to remove the dust from the filter. Once the filter has been cleaned, place the clean filter back into the projector. Replace the filter cover. Reverse the steps above to remount the projector in your classroom and reconnect all the cables to the projector as labeled. If the dirt is difficult to remove or if the filter is torn, replace it.
