3. SURVEY TIME!!!! Survey: • Who has lived in this community (around Rutherford) for one year or less? RAISE your hand if you have. • 2 years, 3 years,…12 years? • Now, a bar graph entitled Length of Time in Iroquois. • You’re welcome to create one with me! • Questions: • Which bar is the tallest? • The shortest? • What does this tell you about how long students have lived in this community?

The Diverse Peoples of the West • Take a look at our bar graphs. • How many students stayed in the same place? • How many students have moved often? • How does moving affect people? • In this chapter, we will learn about the groups of people who moved from one place to another in the 1800s. • We will focus on six groups of people who lived in the West during the 1800s. • Some of the groups benefited by moving West, whereas other groups were harmed by the arrival by the newcomers.

The Diverse Peoples of the West • Let’s read the first section together - page 231 • In the mid 1800s, books, magazines, and newspapers encouraged Americans – as well as people throughout the world – to move to the West. This influx of people had a dramatic effect on the existing cultures in the region. • Let’s read page 232. • You will use a graphic organizer to focus on the groups who lived in the West during the 1800s. • Work with a partner and complete your graphic organizer. • Be sure to completely answer the questions under each section (17.3-17.8).

Lights, Camera, ACTION! • You will work in a group to create interactive dramatizations that show aspects of life for groups of people living in the West during the 1800s. • Interactive dramatization – a skit that involves the audience. Each group will find clever ways to get several members of the audience to take part in the skit. • For example, the group that presents the forty-niners, might ask some audience members to come forward and pretend to shovel dirt as they hunt for gold.

11. Lights, Camera, ACTION! • Each group must recreate the historical condition of its assigned western group for the class to see and experience. • Each interactive dramatization must involve four participants from the audience. • Each group will have four roles – Historian, Director, Set Designer, and Host. You may have more than one person for a role (only if you have more than four people in a group). • Each group member will be responsible for leading his or her group through one step of the drama preparations. • Look at steps 2-5 on your Student Handout.
