  1. Zoom! By: Simon Armitage

  2. The Poet: Simon Armitage • He was born in England. • He was offered a degree at Portsmouth University. • He received a MS in social working. • His work is influenced by the work of Ted Hughes, W.H. Auden, & Philip Larkin • He wrote a book called Gig in 2008.

  3. ~The Poem~ It begins as a house, an end terrace in this case, but it will not stop there. Soon it is an avenue which cambers arrogantly past the Mechanics' Institute, turns left at the main road without even looking and quickly it is a town with all four major clearing banks, a daily paper and a football team pushing for promotion.

  4. and bulleted into a neighboring galaxy, emerging smaller and smoother than a billiard ball but weighing more than Saturn. People stop me in the street, badger me in the check-out queue and ask "What is this, this that is so small and so very smooth but whose mass is greater than the ringed planet?" It's just words I assure them. But they will not have it. On it goes, oblivious of the Planning Acts, the green belts, and before we know it, it is out of our hands: city, nation, hemisphere, universe, hammering out in all directions until suddenly, mercifully, it is drawn aside through the eye of a black hole Poem Continued!

  5. Structure The poem has… 0 stanzas 15 lines And it tells you a story

  6. ∞Poetic Terms∞ • In my poem there is Imagery. In the poem it says “a town with all four major clearing banks, a daily paper and a football team pushing for promotion” I think he uses it to create the feeling of how no matter how small that one little turn or choice in your life is that it could affect your life.

  7. Poetic Terms • A poetic term in the poem is onomatopoeia. It uses onomatopoeia in the title “Zoom”. I think the author used this to draw attention. It also could be because the poem zooms in and out of places of the universe.

  8. Literal Meaning In my opinion the literal meaning of the poem is that a town is apart of the universe. In the poem it turns on to other roads and the more turns it makes they more it grow into more things.

  9. Figurative Meaning In my opinion the poem’s figurative meaning is that everyone has a place in the world and that the choices or turns, can turn into something huge.

  10. Author’s Purpose The author’s purpose in my opinion is to tell you that every little person, or city, is important. I also think that he is trying to explain how things work in life or a city.

  11. ∞Intended Theme ∞ • The intended theme in my poem is to show you that you could be important to everything in life.
