  1. Nagios • Free, open-source software • Runs on Linux, the free unix-based operating system. • Monitors hosts, services, and networks • Nagios has many features

Monitor services • Nagios will monitor the services of a server (http, pop3, smtp, etc.) • When a server is down Nagios will contact the administrator by email, pager, or other methods. • Will also keep trends for all the services • That data can be used to determine what solutions to use in fixing the problem.

  3. Mapping • Nagios also allows you to map your servers. • Browsing the page tells the user whether a server is up or down (rolling over a server provides more information) • By adding a background, adjusting the configuration files, and setting coordinates for the servers, you can literally map the servers. • The map can be further integrated into the site by adding customized headers, footers, and icons.
