Food and shopping There were no supermarkets. You went to different shops for different items. For fruit and vegetables you went to the greengrocer. For meat to the butcher. For fish to the fishmonger. For bread and cakes to the baker. For groceries such as jam, tea, biscuits and cheese you went to the grocer.
Anne Frank Anne Frank was a Jewish girl living in Amsterdam, Holland, during world war 2. On her 13th Birthday, she received a present of a red-and-white tartan diary. She named her diary Kitty. On 6 July 1942, Anne and her family had to go into hiding from the Germans for fear of being sent to a concentration camp. During her two years in hiding, Anne wrote in her diary every day. Eventually, she and her family were found by the Germans. Anne later died in a concentration camp.
