Early history of Region 8 • IRE Region 9 was established on 24 April 1962 • Greater Europe (ITU) – Sections: Israel (05-10-1954), Egypt (08-09-1955), BeNeLux and Italy (13-05-1959), Switzerland (13-12-1960), France (17-10-1961) • New Section: UK & Rep of Ireland (10-07-1962) • IRE Sections in the ‘Rest of the World’ • Buenos Aires, Chile, Colombia, India, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo • After the merger of AIEE and IRE, IRE Region 9 was renamed IEEE Region 8 on 8 January 1963 • Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa

  8. The boundaries of IEEE Region 8 1 • 1 January 1963: At the merger, IRE Region 9 was renamed IEEE Region 8 without any change in its boundaries; the rest of the world (with 6 Sections at that time) was IEEE Region 9. • IEEE Region 10 was established on 1 January 1967.

  9. The boundaries of IEEE Region 8 2 • 1 January 1970: Greenland was added to Region 8, and all the countries that were partly in Region 8 (the USSR and countries in North Africa) are now considered to belong completely to Region 8.17 time zones – The sun never sets!

  10. The boundaries of IEEE Region 8 3 • 1 January 1981: The rest of Africa was added to Region 8, and Regions 8 and 10 got the form that they have now.

IEEE Region 8 vision and mission Vision • Region 8 is an effectively organized, dynamic and influential entity, recognized as a leading and esteemed part of a truly transnational IEEE, with IEEE benefits equally available to all members Mission • To serve the needs of the members of the Institute, the profession and society at large, by enhancing and supporting the IEEE’s Organizational Units and their activities within Region 8 • 31 January 2014:80,039 members;30% students • Region 10: 115,337 members; 47% students • R8+R10: 195,376 members; 40% students • IEEE: 438,705 members; 29% students

Key steps to realize the mission • Provide a platform for coordination, motivation and interaction among Region 8 units • Provide a link between the Region and other IEEE organizational units • Work to achieve smooth and effective operations in different countries, recognizing cultural differences, and effectively cooperating with national societies and other organizations • Expand IEEE presence and activities to new geographic areas in Region 8 • Promote the transnational nature of IEEE within the Region and the Institute

What does the R8 Committee do? • Conducts two annual meetings of the Region leadership [next one: Budapest, 5-6 April 2014] • Used for coordination of the Region business and for training of new volunteers • Supports activities of local Organizational Units • Coordinates meetings for technical and professional purposes throughout the Region • Including student events • Coordinates activities between R8 entities and Organizational Units from outside the Region • Engages in member development • Website: www.ieee.org/r8 or www.ieeer8.org

Region 8 conferences • EuroCon since 1971; #15 in Croatia, 2013 • MeleCon since 1981; #16 in Tunisia, 2012 • AfriCon since 1983; #11 in Mauritius, 2013 • SibirCon since 2008; #2 in Russia, 2010 • HistelCon since 2008; #3 in Italy, 2012 • EnergyCon since 2010; #2 in Italy, 2012 More than 300 IEEE conferences are held in Region 8 every year. • Most conferences are technically co-sponsored by Sections or other Organizational Units.
