  2. Common Causes of Accidents • Falling • Inhaling • Electrical Contact • Exposure to Heat or Cold • Striking Against • Getting Hit • Getting Caught in • Exposure to Fire

  3. Safe Work Environments • Clean work area • Tools would be clean • Color coded safety zones • All equipment safety guards installed • Equipment and power tools properly grounded

  4. Safe Work Environment • Equipment regularly serviced • Environmentally safe • Organized • Safety conscious workers

  5. Importance of Color Coding • Alerts everyone of specific dangers • Identifies acceptable traffic lanes • Allows everyone to find safety equipment easily

  6. Safety Colors • Red - associated with danger and emergencies • Orange - associated with machine hazards • Yellow - identifies parts on machines that knobs control or adjust the machine • Blue - used for signs of warning

  7. Color Code • Green - indicates safety equipment • White - used to mark traffic area • Gray - used on floors of work areas

  8. General Shop Safety Rules • Do not use a power tool until you understand it thoroughly and it has been demonstrated by the instructor. • Use guards on power tools • Always keep fingers away from the moving cutting edges • Keep the floor around the work area clean

General Laboratory Safety Rules • Make all adjustments with the power off and the tool at a dead stop • Always wear approved eye protection • Do not run in the agriculture laboratory • Never talk to or interrupt anyone while he or she is using a power tool • Never leave a power tool until it has stopped completely

  10. General Laboratory Safety Rules • Report strange noise or faulty operation to your instructor • Observe and follow safety color coded areas and signs • Do not use hand tools with damaged handles • Get permission from your instructor prior to operating a power tool
