Editors wanted new designs that would • Entice people to read the new by making it look interesting and easy to find • Make news more understandable • Convey the personality of the paper
3 broad groups of readers • Die hard – usually older than 35, spend 45 minutes a day with paper • Information seekers – read more specific articles • News scanners – little exertion on their part as possible, glance over page looking at pictures, headlines, graphics, pause to read a few graphs
The last two are at-risk readers. But if you skimp on hard news, could lose diehards. If too much work, kiss scanners goodbye.
Achieving goals through design Goal 1 – Entice reader: create devices to entice the reader – headlines, pictures, information boxes, pullout quotes. Called “Points of entry” because lure readers to read the story
Goal 2) Make news understandable – Provide ways to get scanners story by not reading
Goal 3) Convey papers personality – Often our impressions of newspapers are shaped by the amount of contrast in their designs • Variety of typefaces • Variety of shapes on the page • Use of graphics, color and rules
Goal 4) Newspapers also display personality in news judgment and writing styles
