The Mass Media • During this time, the media grew by huge numbers • Newspaper circulation rose by 42% • Big paper companies like The New York Times grow whereas the smaller companies shrink • Newspaper industries interested in profit: so what type of stories do you think they would most likely print? • Radios owned grew by 16,983% • 1896: Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi invented the radio • 1920: Frank Conrad sets up a radio transmitter in his garage and transmits sports scores and recorded music • Radio companies like NBC get their start in this era
