  1. Do Now • Part 1: Pass your testing booklets to the front of the class. I will keep these stored over the weekend and hand them back to you on Monday. • Part 2: Pass up your parental consent forms for the study on UP student performance (Remember… Pizza)

  2. Pride of the week Table 6: Kerr, Abdullah, Williams Future prize options…

  3. Definition from dictionary.com: An outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. What is Irony? For example: If a boy is thirsty and has water in front of him, we expect he would drink it. However, if he chooses not to drink it and becomes dehydrated, this would be ironic (an example of irony). Logic tells us that people who are thirsty and have access to water normally drink it..

  4. <<<<IRONY>>> starring Accountability c/o 2015 Tuesday-We talked about how 9 of our 20 students were failing pride at the time. However…. (get ready for major irony!) That SAME Tuesday, only 6 of you turned in your exit ticket. The rest are set to receive a 0% for the day!

  5. So what is the irony??? • It is ironic that on the same day in which we discuss how not turning in your assignments kills your grade, the majority of you decide not to turn in your assignment! • The same student that expresses a desire to get good grades won’t even take the time to complete a 2 sentence response!

  6. Whenever you don’t turn in an assignment, you get a 0%, and 0%s are…. GRADE KILLERS!!!!

  7. Let’s do the math: What is the average of a 100% (A) and a 60% (F)? What is the average of a 100% (A) and 0% (F)? 80%- PASSING 50%- Failing

  8. “Getting a zero is like getting 2 Fs” • Not turning in one assignment negates all the hard work that you have done on other assignments. 50% = F BUT 0% = F + F

  9. Let’s prove the point! Which of the two students has a higher class average? Student 1 Student 2: grades: 60, 80, 60, 60, Grades: 100, 80, 80, 0

  10. And the answer is… They have the SAME average!!! (65%) Despite the fact that student 2 has generally higher grades, his zero brought him down to the same level as student 1 who consistently receives lower grades

  11. Out of the two, I admire student #1 more Shows better work ethic! If he resubmits just one of his assignments using the suggestions I provide, he will probably raise one of his 60%s to an 80%s. If so, he will have a 70%- This is a higher grade than student #2!

  12. We might be the “smart” pride in terms of test scores but many of us are not been acting smart academically!!! Our Reputation!!! Mr. Kerr Mr. Williams BUT Just kidding!!!

  13. 0%s become even more dangerous when grades are weighted • Who remembers the album cover project? • Pt 1: Symbols worksheet (8 ppl turned it in) • Pt 2: Album cover (I have 5, but 10 were done) That means that a majority of you scored a 0% on a major assignment worth 25% of your grade!!! 0

  14. Putting it into perspective How I calculate your grade: Preparation and participation = 5% Skills practice and classwork= 10% Do Nows and Exit Tickets = 20% Special projects= 25% Binder/agenda check, case study tests = 40% In which category does receiving a 0 hurt the most?

  15. Looking at grades in my class Do Nows- Each worth about 2% of your final grade Album cover project- Worth 25% of your final grade Agenda/binder check- Worth 40% of your final grade

  16. Your grades in my class Now that you realize how your grades are weighted, think about how many of you did not turn in the album cover project and how many of you are not ready for the agenda/binder check that was scheduled for today! Lets look at the grades from my class…

  17. Consequence for not passing pride… Although you will not receive a lower GPA or be forced to repeat next year, you will have to take a summer school course with the dean! This could prevent you from attending your Study UP!

  18. Checking your grades- making up work this weekend: • PowerSchool- Will be handing out your password for those who don’t have it • I also printed you out your grade report for all classes • I am calling out each student’s highest score. • Sharpschool-http://west.urbanprep.org/ • I expect you to work on missing assignments over the weekend and to turn it in on Monday!!!! • If you have a failing grade in my class after pride Tuesday- I am calling your parents.

  19. “We Make No Excuses” Take control of your academic career… and your life! • Some of you believe that you get bad grades because your teacher dislikes you or grades too harshly or doesn’t remind you enough…. Right or wrong, they are not going anywhere. • Before you blame a teacher for your poor grades think of 2 things you could do yourself to get your grade better. • Ex: Check the teacher’s Sharpschool page to make up work • Ex: See teacher during their office hours to get extra help

  20. For Monday… • Turn in your assignments for my class- • Use PowerSchool to check what you are missing and SharpSchool to print out the Do-Nows. (I don’t have Do-Nows from first 4 weeks online) • especially the symbols worksheet/ album cover if not completed. I will only deduct 50% of your final project grade for turning it in late- No resubmissions! (please turn in your rubric again w/ work attached if I already graded yours and deducted more than 50%) . • Prepare your agenda- Make sure that all boxes are filled out and that… • Check marks to the left of completed skills practice • Be descriptive about what the work is exactly that must be done • Exact time frame written for each extracurricular activity • List upcoming projects and tests • Students with Fs will receive a report on how to make up uncompleted work. This work must all be made up by NEXT THURSDAY!
